Has somebody built a BMW based Locost?

Hi !
I'm studying the possibility to build a Locost based on a BMW E30.

Do you know someone who has already built such a Locost?

Thanks ! ! !

Laurent.

There was someone built a Viento using a BMW 6 cylinder engine, but that was the only donor part he used I think.

The Malrlin sports cars are built around a E30 donor if that helps

Thanks for your help!
I'd like to build one based on a E30 donor car, with a 318 IS 1,8l 16v engine.

I'm building one from a E36 318is...

The car is pretty much the same, and so is the engine, the E36 has the same mechanics as the E30 except for the rear suspension...
I was looking for a E30 at first but couldn't find one... the rear bridge (or what's the english word for the part holds the entire diff, suspension, etc...???) comes out in one piece just like a miata and the locost chassis can be adjusted to fit the whole thing!!!

I'm only half way dismantling mine, but from what I've seen I can only say that in my oppinion the beemer is the next ideal donor vehicle for the locost now sierra's are getting extinct... and the 4cylinder models have very compact engine's (and a 318is can be tuned to 250bhp!!!) so they fit in a standard chassis... the 6cyll models are not locost material because the engine is way to big...

only thing not so cool are the engine electronics... (on the E36, don't know the E30 story) you have to use the original dials and the car has numeral sensors you'll have to bypass...

Hi Starfish !

really interesting ! how much did you spent for your donor car?

I'm also trying to find a E30 but did'nt find one for now... it seams they are no more available.

Which shemas do you us to build your Locost? those from Champion's book or Gibbs's ?

If you speak french, watch this link => http://kitcar.bb-fr.com/Les-repliques-c5/Les-Seven-f17/LOCOST-sur-base-BMW-e30-t1269.htm

"Rear bridge" you mean "rear axle"...

I spent €500 on the car and it has a running engine... it only has about 130k km on it and it has a "baby on board" bumpersticker (= good engine and gearbox ) the only things missing are the doors, some body parts and the fuel pump needs replacement (hey, it's a beemer... what did you expect )

I also experienced the E30 is getting rare, and even more expensive than the E36 because it's becomming an old-timer...

I'm building it of the Champion book but with a McSoreley 7+422 chassis even though the BMW engine fit's in a standard chassis...

And I just can't stop talking about that engine!!! I fired it up yesterday when I took of the exhaust on the donor and OMG!!! My neighbours are going to hate me It only has 145Bhp but I'm pretty shure I can crank it up to 250 without using a turbo... don't you just love German mechanics?

BMW engined cars??

I have a Marcos powered by a 323i......
but presently looking to switch to 325 which is more tuneable (from stock 147 to 220 b.h.p.) but possibly with Omex throttle bodies....
Check out FritzBits in Forest of Dean. Guy there really knows his stuff, also has a website but don't have that with me at present
