Whats the best way to clean the diff (sierra ) before painting it.

Goof TFR and a pressure washer

thats what i did to the low ratio diff i fitted to the trackcar

Personally- I used a wire brush. Didn't take very long and no sign of the paint flaking after three years....

I even got carried away and painted the rear support bracket until I realised I didn't need it with the STM car!!!

Used Wire brush on drill, then petrol, then Motorcycle Cleaner then Thinners.

Was great fun - Not.
