What to look out for?

I'm looking at buying a sierra, its actually for using to go to work to start but later im going to take some parts off it. basically i was wondering what are the telltale signs that a car is knackered? i saw one tonight that looked immaculate but was making a loud noise somewhere in the engine. the guy said it was the tappets and was easy to fix but i was a bit dubious, especially when he dropped from £180 to £100 without me even trying. anyone know how to spot a good car?

Cheers, Pete
