Sierra rear disc brake sourcing - questions!
Hi, I have had a couple of offers from scrapyards for Sierra rear disc brake calipers for my MNR build.
I will go and check them this weekend, starting with scrapyard that quoted the best price. But I have a couple of questions:
1. Is there any difference in rear disc calipers whatsoever depending on what car they came from? Late diesel vs. 4x4 vs. Cosworth, etc. MNR said I
can use any caliper. Which one should I go for?
2. How do I assess the quality of the calipers? What should I check to see if the caliper will work perfectly?
3. If the caliper is from an ABS equipped car, is that an issue? Should I look for a different one?
4. Do all calipers use the same pads? I know ABS and non ABS versions exist, but other than that can a non-ABS one be fitted to any caliper?
5. Do all calipers use the same size disc?
Sorry for these, but I couldn't find too much info in the Haynes manual and I would like to make sure I buy the right stuff...
Thanks!
Gergely

1) Rear disc callipers are the same for solid disks, though the vented rears are different.
2) Condition, personally I'd look for some them to have been recently used, e,g fluid still present. Also look for the condition of the dust
seals and pistons. As a matter of course I'd still replace all the seals.
3) ABS Car, the issue is with the ABS teeth, for an MK these need to removed, but don't know about the mnr, sorry.
4) The pads for the calliper should be the same for the solid discs, don't know about the vented.
5) Discs are differnt sizes, the cosworth disk is a larger diameter and the hub carrier is also different having longer lugs to accomodate the larger
disc.
Hope that provides some info.
Cheers

there are just two types of rear caliper - Solid dics type or vented disc type
I think these both use the same pads :?
vented discs are found on cossie 4x4's (and 5 stud on granada 24v's)
273mm solid discs are on the RWD cossie's (I think these have different hubs/ hub carriers to all the rest)
253mm solid discs are found on V6, XR4, XR4x4 and ABS cars (and 5 stud on granada's)

My first thought would be to price up a recon pair of callipers from your local auto factors and ask if they are exchange items. With the handbrake
mechanism they are very complex and apparently need special tools to dismantle them. If you can get a recon pair at a decent price then i'd
treat any from the breakers as "for exchange" only. You will still need the hubs / bearing carrriers / calliper carriers though.
Have you looked into fitting the lighter VW / Audi group rear callipers instead???

Solid rear discs
The Sierra solid rear discs are the same as those used on the rear of the Focus, so there should not be a problem in obtaining them.

Rear Calipers
Before going ahead with the Sierra calipers take a look at the Compbrake and Rally Design websites. They have brand new Audi/ VW calipers, brand new,
with sliders for something like £60 each,
