Which Seirra!?

I've decided on the MK Indy R and want to go down the bike engine route so obviously dont need the engine / gearbox from my donor car.

I do want discs all round just because I hate brake shoes and discs look better, which Seirra's will fulfil my needs?

Deciding what engine you'll fit, and what ratio diff should be your first port of call.

There are gear ratio calculators about but many on here can help also. Rear disks means an XR4x4 or ABS equipped car so mostly 3.62 or 3.92 ratio's. You may want a longer ratio diff for certain bike engines though which can be done a few ways (but more money - Freelander diff or 3.38 / 3.14 Sierra diff!!)

PS welcome to the asylum. Ignore the doubters - BEC is best!!

Freelander is a good option with the Busa - its what Westfield use on the Megabusa.

For the ZX12R, i think a 3.62 or 3.38 Sierra diff would be fine. Cant find the calculator i had at the moment - am sure someone will point you in the right direction soon.

Are you looking for road or track use primarily?? Either engine should be good for about 130mph in a BEC so i'd set the diff ratio accordingly to do say 130-135mph at max rpm

clicky link to gear ratio calculator

There you go - have a play with that. 195/50/15 or 205/60/13 seems to be the most popular tyre sizes for BEC's

its 3.2:1. You can insert a line into the spreadsheet and manually add the ratio in there.

Welcome to the mad house.

Adding your location (roughly) will be usefull as you get into the build. Anybody local might be able to help out that way with any problems.

Make sure you get to Stoneleigh show 2-3 May. There'll be loads of cars to get inspiration from. Have you ridden in a BEC? If not I'm sure you'll be able to cadge a ride in one.

PS, Someone will be along soon to tell you a BECs are no good. Don't listen to them; They know nothing!

Thanks, Ive been out in a Yamaha R1 engined mini (cira 550kg) and it felt really good, even with the R1 engine is felt like it pulled fairly well from low down.

Oh - dont forget the ZZR1400 as well. If your budget stretches to a Busa then the big Kwak should be in the running too.

link for one a few weeks ago

Also try Andy Bates (AB Performance) and Malc (Yorkshire Engines) - both are forum members, both have superb reputations, and both should be able to give you loads of help / advice / supply on your engine options

If thats the case how much of a sierra does the tiger use?Would you be better just sourcing individual parts?Bearing in mind you'll probably end up overhauling all of them off the donour anyway and you'll be on a q plate?

sorry, got mixed up somehow!i built my striker which is meant to be sierra based out of a 200sx.i only used the ford rear hubs(about £20 from a scrapy)and cortina uprights which i stumbled across before the car was scrapped.i'd imagine yours'll be a similar situation but i dont know...

I'd suggest a XR4x4 rear axle assembly might well be worth considering if you can find one at the right money (I paid £150). You could use the hubs and calipers, maybe the driveshafts too as the basis for some custom shafts to mate the freelander diff to sierra hubs. If you use a ZX12R then the 3.62 LSD might even be fine for your use. Not sure of the gearing on the ZZR1400.

You could always sell the LSD diff on as well - probably get more than half of the price of the rear axle straight back.

Does MK give the option of Cortina uprights? I'd be tempted with ali hubs and maybe the uprights too if thats the case.
