Type 9 G/Box to 4x4 2.9i

Has anybody fitted a type 9 to an ex 4x4 2.9i V6. Mine was fitted with the MT75 G/Box. Are there any problems that need to be overcome. Any assistance greatly apreciated.

A 2.8 Crapi, Granada, XR4i ... type 9 will do. At a pinch a 2.3 V6 would probably last ok in a locost...

Use the 2.8 Starter Fly and cluthc partts and it will go together no problems..

I had an XR4i with a 2.9EFi and had no problems appart form forgetting to do up the gearbox topcover bolts and having to drop the whole lot to the floor again when I found oil everywhere

You will need a 2wd sump too.. Any Cologne V6 2wd sump will doo..

You need a gasket for the steel sump. The 4x4 Ally sump does not have one..

Echo all the above. Mine has an ex-XR4x4 2.8 V6 in it and I used Capri v6 type 9 box, 4x4 alloy bellhousing, 4x4 clutch and flywheel and a steel sump from a 2.9 Scorpio. All seems to work.

BTW the type 9 fitted to 4 pot lumps has a slightly shorter input shaft. It may appear to work, but the release bearing will wear out very quickly.

The 4 Pot box also does not have an uprated front layshaft bearing machined into the front of the box..

I heard it wasnt the release bearing, but the gearbox bearing. This is cos the 'dowel' bit on the end of the box shaft isnt long enough to engage with the pilot (support) hole in the flywheel, and all loads are taken by the box

Yes the release bearing has nothiong to do with it.

Spigot bearing in the crank would probably no tbe near the 4pot box..

What in heavens name is a VSS, when people start talking in capitols, thats me lost. Are you talking about the little electrical gizmo that is attached to the speedo cable, if so what does it do. I thought that it was something to do with fitting a trip computor, which my 4x4 didn't have. HELP!!!.

Vehicle Speed Sensor..

It informs the ECU ( engine management system ) of the road speed.

This is generaly usefull for the ECU to know, but most importantly, as the car breaks the fueling and ignition are altered to save fule as you come to a stop and dip the clutch the engie will dip very low in the rev range and sometimes stall..

The VSS tell the ECU that teh car is comming to a halt, it readjusts the ignition/timing and opens teh idle valve slightly to prepare to stop. once haltedthe ECU can start running it's normal IDLE stratergy.

You will need to modify the speedo cables to fit the VSS inline with the gearbox.

I assume that you have done this mod to a speedo cable in the past, so any info on how it is to be achieved would be useful. I take it that I was correct that it is the electrical gizmo inserted into the 4x4's speedo cable, with a three wire connection. ATB Chippy.

Yep the three wire Gizmo's the one..

I kindof bodged it...

I hade the 4i speedo cable, pushed onto a 4i trip computer sender, screwwed into the VSS from a DOHC sierra ( the fitting are slightly different.. And then the short cable normal attatched to the 4i trip computer pushed onto that..

All the pushed together joints were then secured with Insulting tape..

Not prety, not ideal, but it worked.. I had to use the trip computer sender to get teh right combination of male/female ends..

I heve heard that there's a spedo calbe specialist that will make up any cable with any end.. For not much money at all..

So worth investicating that.
