Early Design stages of a 4A-GE Locost
I got "the book" about a month and a half ago, and have since bought several service manuals (Chiltons)
Toyota Corolla/MR2/Tercel 1984-90
Toyota Celica/Supra 1971-85
Toyota Cressida/Van 1983-90
Chilton Auto Repair Manual 1987-91 (includes american-branded cars) (mostly just for learning purposes)
that's in addition to my previous book
Haynes Toyota Camry 1983-91 (for my daily driver, a 1991 Camry)
I've been looking through all the books, and had a few questions.
Any model questions relate specifically to US/Canadian cars, but the options may have been the same on UK cars.
1.) I'm interested in the RWD Corolla that came with the 4A-GE engine, but I have no idea which model years met all of these points: RWD, Fuel
Injection (GE, not FE or C), Manual (5spd preferred)
It appears (though not explicitly stated) from the books that all of the rear wheel drive Corollas were carburated (not such a problem, but I think I
like FI a bit more) and I'm worried that it will be hard to find a 4A-GE that's actually worth using in a car that old.
2.) Does it even matter if I get a RWD corolla, or is it easier to just source a T50 tranny and rear axle from another car (supra, celica) and get a
suitable bellhousing? If I do find a RWD corolla, what kind of tranny might it come with?
3.) Does it matter what vintage 4A-GE I get? Could I get one from a much newer car, or does it have to be a pre-86? If I can get my hands on a much
newer 4A-GE, I'd be happy to go with that instead of an older engine, but was just wondering if there was that much of a benefit.
I'm mainly interested in the older corollas because they do have the RWD option (which may or may not make life easier) and I think that a
corolla might not have been thrashed as much as an MR2 (engine) or supra (tranny/axle)
Any thoughts on the above would be most appreciated

1985-1987 Corolla GTS has the 4age in a RWD set up with the t50 tranny.
the 4ac was carbed while the 4age and 4afe were both efi.
www.geocities.com.motorcity/pit/9975/databy subject/gearboxes.html
will show which cars had the t50. the 4age was offered in MR2 and Corolla until 1992 (in the US) later years available. all will mate to the t50
with appropriate bellhousing.
power available goes up with year of production (newer = better).
the 4age is a very durable engine with a lot of aftermarket support. lower mileage is better, but 175k+ life can be expected.
take a look at:

there is a lot of support online beyond this short list.
welcome aboard.
