Cortina/Capri donor?
With my chassis almost built I've reached the point where I need some oily bits. I had planned to use a Mk1 or 2 Escort as a donor but prices
seem to have gone silly. So now I'm thinking of a Cortina or Capri, some of which still seem to be selling for sensible prices. However
I'm not sure which model to get. Will the uprights, axles, racks etc of all models fit or do I need a specific model?
Thanks,
Dave

I used a capri and if you choose either capri or cortina you will probably have to modify the chassis to get the engine in and as far back as
possible. Also the diagonal tube at th top of the engine bay needs to be on the opposite side as the exhaust on the pinto is on the other side to the
xflow. I would go for cortina as the hubs are correct (capri hubs wont work). Rear axle is better on the capri (and probably cortina) than escort as
it fills the arches better. Also it was suggested to me to get the engine as low down as possible by chopping the sump as the pinto is much heavier
than the xflow and it disturbes the handling. Don't know if this is true as I sold my project at rolling chassis stage.
In a nutshell when/if I build another I would choose an escort doner with capri/cortina back axle as a first choice, cortina as second choice and
capri as third. This is because in my experience it is the design process when modifying the plans for non standard parts to fit that increases the
build time dramatically.
Oh and good luck with the build, although I couldn't finish mine I really enjoyed the process, learned many new skills on the way and was really
proud of the result, just wish I had had the time to finish it .
