Do a vehicle enquiry, if it doesn't come up as recognised it's probably been scrapped. If it says it needs tax then you need to send of for a new V5c (with some cash) and a SORN request form.

Yes date of liability is when tax (or SORN in my case) expires(ed).

I'd just fill in the SORN form and send with the new V5c request form.

Worse case is the SORN fine - I've never heard of back tax being asked for or paid. But I wouldn't volunteer unless I really couldn't come up with a reasonable excuse It doesn't look like it was ever SORN so unless it had tax when you bought it <wink> the previous owner was remiss in getting the SORN arranged.

It could well be scrapped. For example, here is a record for an old car my parents had which I know for a fact was squashed many moons ago:

The vehicle details for F267 ENC are:

Date of Liability 29 10 2001
Date of First Registration 01 10 1988
Year of Manufacture 1988
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1998CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval null

And my donor:

Date of Liability 01 07 2004
Date of First Registration 27 10 1988
Year of Manufacture 1988
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1993CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour RED
Vehicle Type Approval null

If it was scrapped then no-one bothered to tell the DVLA. Checked a couple of the cars I used to own and they don't show up on database after scrapping.
