Easiest way to remove engine from Mondeo

What would be the easiest way to remove the engine from a Mondeo?
- I only need th engine, not the gearbox.
- Preferrably the car remains rolling. This will save a few Euro's for the car to reach it's final destination (scrapyard)
- I do have a workshop crane

1. To unbolt the gearbox and lift the engine out
2. To cut and remove the driveshafts, then lift engine and gearbox out
3. To unbolt the subframe and McPherson struts, then lift the chassis

i did option 1,its a tight fit but leaves the shell rollable

to get the engine out with the box left in you will need to take the crank pulley of and its still very very tight.

I guess this will be a tight fit. Do I need to undo the gearbox mounts and move the gearbox to LH side of the car? I think there is only 3cm to move the engine to the RH side in order to remove the gearbox shaft from the clutch...

Just done it and we went for option 3, and this was in our opinion the fastest way.

I voted option 3 - I once did it `option1` style , and it was a pig of a job..........
I once took the engine out of an Alfa 164 by dropping the sub-frame - that took 2 of us 8 hours (and the suspension was already off )

2, engine n box together,cut the shafts,save fafin about try to seperate them in place and the shell is movable straight away ...easy

Option 1

I`ve now removed 2 mondeo engines via the option 1 way. As long as you undo the gearbox mounts, as you lift the engine up the gearbox will also raise. The engine & gearbox will need to get to about 45 degrees upwards before you can seperate them both but it is possible and once removed you can roll the car out of the way! I did it option 1 and wish I had gone for option 3. Remember the subframe will be a lot lighter once the engine is out, only hassle is getting the body high enough.

I took a 9" angle grinder to the front of the escort i liberated my zetec from and straight through the drive shafts as well,clipped the wires and fuel lines unhitched the gear selector unbolted the engine mounts and rolled it out on a trolley board.

I know its animal like but it did the job

In option 1 you're doing least work in theory by only removing what you need but it sounds pretty awkward & tight, I've swapped a Mondeo engine (as in fixed the car & put it back on the road) & decided to remove the engine & box as a unit then swapped the box to the good motor before refitting. Would the box be mounted securely enough with no engine to hold the driveshafts while you tow it to the scrappy?
In option 3 it sounds good as it's the way the factory put it together but they're working with new stuff, all the right tools & are well practiced at it. Your car is (I assume) not the youngest, what happens when the captive nuts in the chassis legs break free as you try to unbolt the subframe? And then you've got to put it together again to move it.
Option 2 is I think the way to go, it means unbolting the gearbox too but that's not too hard & you can get at all the bellhousing bolts dead easy then too rather than doing them in the car, cutting the shafts means you dont have to touch the suspension & the car only needs the loose driveshafts removed in order to tow in on the road, & that would need to be done for option 3 anyway.

I go for option 4. get the angry grinder and cut the front off then the rest can be cut up too
