Jag XJ6
Has anyone built a Locost using the straight 6 Jag engine and axle? The axle is a popular and bullet proof tweek for Mk2 Escorts in Irish Rallying. On
the downside it would make the Locost pretty wide I suppose
250bhp as standard too

you'd need to modify the chassis. i know a few people on here are designing chassis' for straight 6's. mainly bmw units.
they're basing the design on a mcsorley +442 chassis.

the jag rear axle isnt an axle as such.
its a diff bolted to the floor, then the drive shafts act as the top wishbone.
the engine is also rather long.......
if its a really old XJ6 it will be the heavier XK (think its called that) engine rather than the newer 'lighter' AJ6 multivalve unit.
Later ones had the AJ16 4.0L motor

What do you mean by jag axle ? The Jag MK2 Salsbury live axle that was used in late 1960s/early 1970 Escort rally cars before the Baby atlas became
widely available or the complete IRS assembly from an XJ6 ?
With the former better Salsbury axles for Locosts are available from the V6 Capri. As for the latter classic XJ6 IRS unit have you ever seen one
out the car ? it weighs 300+ kg not that far off a compelete ready for SVA MKII Escort based Locost.
The XJ6 and AJ6 engines are just too big and too heavy for a Locost chassis the 7 chassis was designed for an 1172 cc side valve engine or 1220cc
all alloy unit putting over half a ton of Jag engine and box in is sillly and pointless, it turns a 550kg car into a 1300 kg one by the time you add
all the extra weight of all the other bits.
If you want a chassis for a big engine go for a Cobra, it was designed on a scale to make the best of bigger inline 6 and V8 engines.

It was just a curiosity thing.
I have seen a fairly young XJ6 that has been left to rot but the mechanicals on it are fairly decent. Just seems a shame to let it go to waste.
brtishtrident, I know and understand that it is a huge lump and fully appreciate that the chassis would need to take a fair bit of strengthening. Dont
people put Rover V8 engines in these things, surely they cant be much better
just like making things that are different, thats all.

It uses drivetrain and running gear from knackered XJ6s, and is very well done IMO.

a rover v8 is a fairly light (for the size) alu engine.
the earlier jags are not alu , but I think the AJ6 is.
If you want a silly alu engine, try a V12 Jag.
HUGE and about 600lbs. Not for a seven methinks
However, as has been said, the Luego has used the AJ16 (later model of AJ6) engine
