scraping my shell

I've got virtually all the useful bits off my sierra now. now how do i get rid of the shell, without declaring it scrapped as this will cause a problem @ IVA if i dont want a Q plate?

Put it on SORN, remove all identifying marks (VIN plate, stamped numbers, number plates.
Safest to weigh it in at the local scrap metal yard rather than a regular car scrapyard.

If there is any ID left on the shell there is a risk that they could report it as scrapped to the DVLA - I've read the police 'encourage' this to reduce car ringing.

the dvla man tried to tell me i'd have to keep the shell till it was reregistered and was banging on about some sort of checklist for age related plates...

You don't need the physical shell (it's not like they come round to your house to check). But the DVLA can't be informed it's been officially scrapped unless you want a Q.

The checklist for kit conversions is for "Two major components" from the donor.

linky

Major components are discussed on the radically altered vehicle (which is sometimes used when people make their own chassis from steel - i.e. a locost or when some DVLA person c*cks up).

Just a thought is there any of the panels you might want to use? Reducing the amount of scrap you've got to shift

i dont think i could reuse any of the panels... it wouldn't be such an issue, except the car is at my dad in laws works, and he is keen to get rid of it. its in the way and rather untidy at the moment, and also if he puts it outside the local vultures are sure to descend and make a mess on his land...

I wonder what he'll think of angle grinding it in to peices...

You can make a shell into boot sized bits with an axe in less than an hour, quieter too.

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

I cut the vin plate off, chopped the number out the floor, made sure there was no ID, sorned it and sold it to a banger racer

These days its worth chopping it up and weighing it in for scrap. But keep all the ID and sorn it.

I stripped the Sierra donor in 2003. The shell was removed by the council for £30 and I declared the car as scrapped to DVLA. I kept a photocopy of the original V5 and kept the VIN plates.
When I registered the MK earlier this year there was no problem getting an age-related number.
