2.0 DOHC loom stripping ?

Have removed the engine ..i am now removing the loom ..i have removed the ECU but as the wiring loom goes through the bulkhead to the EFI and Coil etc it splits and winds all around the dash ...my question is ...how much of the loom do i really need...i think i will make my own loom for the rest of the build ...this is busting my nuts !!!

you'll probably end up buying a loom kit for the rest of the car, so you'll only need enough to make the engine run

(but even that was too much for me so I ditched it all and got some bike carbs for mine)

You need all of it.. tbh there's 'locost' and there's 'too much trouble to be bothered with'! if it was something like a Saab turbo engine or one of those inferior Nissan ones I'd say go for it but those Sierra twin cams REALLY aren't worth the effort when new Blacktop Zetecs are so cheap.........

With the shell scrap you could open up the hole where the loom goes through to make it easier to remove, I did with mine!

As said the DOHC is nothing special but I'm using mine: it came free with the car, it'll make a sub 700kg shift resonably well, helps toward getting the age-related plate, will be easy to get going (it's carb one), easy to upgrade to another Ford engine later. Some folk get very wound up about the use of them in a kit car (or anything else!), just another reason to use it for me! If you want more power it's not a good start, but if you just want it to go & aint bothered about tuning it then there's nowt wrong with it.

Cheers for that...was getting a bit piddled off with "change it for ...." as you said its all about age related plates and getting it going on a Locost as possible !!

Those DOHC engines are pretty good, not as powerful as many others but there won't be many times when you could use the full power anyway.

Fit it and use it, when you find yourself doing a lot of full throttloe and it still isn;t enough, then maybe would be the time to change it.

If you can isolate the engine loom/ecu from the rest, then my advice would be to ditch the rest and get a ready made loom from Premier or one of the others.

I am guessing there will be one or three plugs that the engine looms conect to the car. I just unplug them there and have done with it.

just a case of wiring in the lives and earths and a couple of relays.

Never done a sierra dohc but done loads of mondeo, fiesta, escort's.

I assume its injection ? if its carb then you will need hardly anything from the car.

Hi,

I had the DOHC in my car and I fitted Bandit carbs to it with Megajolt, it ran like a dream and took me around Europe with no problems.

I changed to Megajolt and bike carbs cos the intake was just too big and I didnt want the plenum sticking up out of the bonnet.

If you are interested I do have the inlet manifold available and ready to fit bandit carbs.

The only reason I changed the engine was I had an offer for a new Blacktop, G/box and exhaust for a really good price so I couldn't refuse it.

When I was playing with my loom I used the fence and put nails into it to hang the loom on and slowly cut out the bits I didn't need and then shortened the cables to suit my build. Then I found out about Megajolt and all my plans changed.

Regards

Bob

A set of carbs are about 40 - 50 quid, megajolt is £45 in kit form with 3 quid spent in Maplins for the resistors, diodes etc. The Edis unit and coil pack you can get from a scrappy for 15 - 30 quid depending on the scrappy.

I dont have the carbs but can have an ask around with a couple of contacts. I have the manifold though and you can have it for £30 plus P&P
