Wheel backspace

Will a 5.5" backspace fit on a locost?

I think that on an 8" wheel makes it Et19

Adam, I think that on an Escort axled locost the answer is no. A Standard 5" wide escort wheel is also ET19 & that gives it a backspace of about 3.25" & this seems to be about all that the escort axled cars will take & still have clearance to the trailing arms. I want to use 5.5" et38 wheels, which give a back space of 4.25" & I would have to use spacers with an escort axle which is why I`m going the wide track sierra way. You`d probably have to use 2" spacers with an escort axle & that wheel combination. Of course if you`re not using an Escort axle then please ignore all this!

Adam , just looked at your archive, see that you`re using a sierra diff so presumably width at the back should not be a problem. As for the front, I think you`re using Cortina uprights & you should try to put the contact patch of the tyre in the same place as it would with a cortina wheel, which is 5.5" et38. As an aside, your wheels at 8" wide & 5.5" back spacing are et38 , not et19, & from my understanding of this sort of thing, this should in fact put the centreline of your tyre in the correct place. I think!

Its the 13x8s on the rear I worry about, the fronts are 5.5" overall. On the rear it has shortened drive shafts to bring it to normal. As they are split rims I could get smaller inner rims to take it to 13x7 and 4.5" backspace as I know this will fit (my 14s have a backspace of 4.5".

Even with a 4.5" backspace you`re probably looking at a spacer, perhaps about 1", I reckoned on 3/4" b4 I went wide track but a friend who has a westfield based chassis with escort back end, book in all its vital measuerments has had to go to spacers, I think he`s got 7" wheels, I`ll try to find out. Cheers, Steve
