What's the fastest car I could get for £1000 - £1500?
Hi All,
As above really...
A Ferrari 430 came down the road I work on giving it absolute beans. Ignoring the fact that it's only 40 limits and he was probably closer to
140, it did sound awesome when going for it. And just started me thinkin as to which car I could with a genuinely minuscule budget that would be
entertaining to drive fast.
It would have to be a compromise I'm afraid... (doesn't everything nowadays!)
1. 4 seats
2. Not shocking on fuel (when not driving like a lunatic)
3. £1000-1500 as above, as I won't have a budget for a new car for ages...
4. Probably a host of other things that I'd need to compromise on having a 2 year I'd!
5. But I do only have to drive 8 miles to work...
6. Erm that's all I can think of right now!
So what would you guys pick?
The only thing that came to my mind is a mk4 golf gti or seat Leon cupra etc (trying to keep it as modern as possible for the money as I won't
be able afford to maintain a car that was going to go wrong every month...
Thanks in advance, for your suggestions!
Steve

Leon Cupras at that sort of money will be a high miler, but you might find a good one, and they are reliable enough, silly cheap to tune to high power
levels. Fun to drive as well. They do average about 30mpg
You could get a mk1 Mitsy GTO, which are also great fun, sound nice too with the twin turbo V6. Mine averaged about 25mpg. You wont get much quicker
for the money though, ~6.5sec to 60 in stock form. 4WD too. Only 2 doors, but 4 seat, get 2 kids in the back easy.

If it was me, I'd got for a E36 BMW 328i, you'll find a fairly good 1 for around £500-750, that'll leave you £1000-750 to spend on
tuning and handling mods.
(on these there's a good mod, fit the inlet manifold from the E36 325i, and you gain 30-40bhp instantly!!)

Keep an eye on "Shed of the Week" on pistonheads. Seat Leon 20vt this week.
Fiat Coupe Turbo, back seats aren't too bad. Timing belt is expensive to change so writes them off.

Eh-up Steve.
Either 328i (as already mentioned) or an early E36 325i both will cost <£1000 and put a huge smile on your face.
or a Pug 306 GTi-6, this is a genuinely one of the greatest hot hatches ever and surprisingly fast car. Watching S2000/Boxter/200sx drivers bouncing
up and down in there seats as you out drag them down the back straight at Donnington is one of life great pleasures.

I got a few calls from 12 year olds, an idiot offering me £500 for it, then a call from the Czech Republic. Canny bloke called Ludek bought it and
drove it home, he is currently converting it to lhd, and swapping the block & pistons with a T5 engine he has. Its going to be a 500bhp beast.
Grey Coupes are very rare in the UK, Coupes hardly exist in Czech.

Remapped 1.8 golf turbo will do 36 mpg on a steady run mid to low twenties when hammered

Yep and nearly as quick as a reliant kitten too
I'm tuning a 9-5 that I got off here a couple of weeks back and with a 3" downpipe I'm knocking up and a few map tweaks should see
280hp for half your budget Steve . It nearly goes round corners and is stuffed full of toys .
