how do you tell the DVLA you are breaking a donor
Hi all,
i am very new to all of this (still haven't chosen a donor car)
i was thinking today about what donor to get and then it occurred to me, after stripping what ever donor i do end up getting down to the bits i want
and need.
i would be left with a shell (after i have sold everything else on ebay), so i could take the shell to the local scrap metal merchant and get rid of
it.
but how do i declare that the car no longer exists?
normally when you scrap a car you just take it to a scrap yard and they deal with the dvla.
any ideas would be great.
ps just read the thread below, sorry. ps i didnt want to keep the plate as i like Q

You fill in the bit on the V5 saying you have scraped the vehicle.

When you register the car, using the donors cars v5 to declare what pasts you used, the DVLA will automatically register it as scrapped.
Just hold on to the all the paperwork and keep sorning it as long as you are building it.

No, you don't tell them its scrapped.
You put it on SORN, (you may need to renew it once or twice as SORN only lasts 12 months).
Take off the bits you want, save anything that might be useful.
Remove the ID VIN plate ( I cut out most of the slam panel ) and don't forget the number plates and the VIN by the driver's seat.
Then, when you go to register your kit, you will still have the V5 from the Donor to help with the age - related plate. At that point you then
declare the car scrapped - produce the receipt from the weigh - in of the cut-up shell to prove you have disposed of it responsibly.
(If you have left any ID on it when you weigh it in, the scrap merchant has to inform DVLA that they have recieved a scrap car and DVLA will scrap
your Donor, so ensure you remove all ID!!)

As above I would suggest you do not scrap the car and tell DVLA.
Break the car, remove all signs of the Vin/Chassis number from the vehicle and scrap the shell as normal metal.
I handed over the old V5 when registering my kit after IVA and it caused no problems.
From that point on I no longer got reminders to sorn or tax the old car. I did have a receipt for the old chassis from a metal recyclers as a way to
show the shell had been disposed of properly, that was also presented to the DVLA.

The new v5c's don't allow you to tick the scrapped box anymore.
As Steve says keep it till you IVA your car then the DVLA will scrap it for you.

when you take the shell and v5 to registered scrap merchant (or he collects) he will issue you with a "destruction notice".
this is your proof, keep it.

Don't think you can have read the thread properly.
When you weigh in the shell, YOU KEEP THE V5.
Remove all identification from the parts you are scrapping.
If you scrap it officially at this point, you won't be able to get an age-related plate.
The V5 is then presented to DVLA together with your IVA certificate, receipts and application for registration documents.
The V5 proves the 'source' of major parts - axles, transmission, steering and engine (in some cases).
If you can't prove the origin of the major parts, you will end up with a 'Q' plate (which means 'Questionable origin'
).

read the thread
he WANTS a Q plate
Makes you wonder why I bother. - Ok, Ok, I have now re-read his question. I stand corrected.
(but the advice still stands for those who want an age-related plate).

You don't keep the donor plate, per se - you get a plate bearing that year's letter.
