Don't let me down now guys.
OK your task should you choose to accept it is.
I'm looking at a landrover disco2. Its listed as a 1999 vehicle but has had a facelift to the front lights and bumper fitted before the curent
owner who knows little about cars.
The guys on landyzone are telling me its a 1998 vehicle but was registered first in 2004?? An it may have been a airport/military/etc etc car but not
on the road. Or it could have been a landrover developement car?.
The question is how on earth can I find out that first 4 years of history.??
Over to you all.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

To be honest I don't know.....but I was thinking that at that age it is probably wise to look to buy on it's condition, if worried about
it's origins look to buy a different one - there are loads on the market.
In any case, it will go wrong - I speak from experience! But I wouldn't sell mine, it's fab 
If you do buy one, get it chipped. It'll totally transform it.
Just a thought, maybe the DVLA could assist tracking it's early years through the chassis number?

its only got 84k on the clock so hope its as god as the photos look an not a bodge up. As an aside I took swmbo to have a seat and feel of one nearer
to home today. She asked the salesman how much MPG? he said 40 to 45MPG????????? Still who am i to argue if it swings her round. LOL

Them's wise words - all on the condition at that age.
Great engine - can get a bit expensive for parts compared to a 200 or 300tdi.
Make sure the clutch is ok - not cheap by the time you've factored in a new flywheel.

Which engine and box?
Chassis number will give you DOM, HPI check may give you a clue on history? V5 too - it should say new at first reg. BFG (military tax free) would be
UK reg before export, then get the original plate back on re-import.

TD5 Manual box.

Make sure diesel is not getting into the oil, these have the fuel rail in the head so an expensive repair 
Why would you facelift the front unless you have ploughed it into something, needs sticking in the air and checking the chassis, it's still the
old ladder chassis so a 1/4 front hit can easily twist.
For advice on early life try Dunsfold, they should be able to tell if there was anything special about it.

There is something called Land Rover Microcat which apparently will give all the original specification of a Land Rover by entering the vehicle VIN
number.
Its available here: http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/2009/12/land-rover-microcat-november-2009/
I haven't tried it myself but others on the D2boysclub forum have. If it was a specialised vehicle, military etc, then it should show up in the
spec.
I wouldn't worry about the facelift front, its a popular mod to make the vehicle look younger. It ought to be done properly tho' which
involves different grille and bumper/spoiler as well as headlights.
I have two D2's and the older one, a 1999 Td5 Auto will be for sale soon after I have fixed a few things.

I've been out of the LR scene for a few years after a career driving them and a succession of Disco 1, Freelander 1, Defender 90, P38 - what

The guys are saying it does not appear on microcat?? BUT all insurance sites and dvla have it online as what it is. Been suggested that it could be a
jap import. Have spoken with a mate who is into landrovers big time and he says looking at it he'd be 80% certain its a jap import. But he
can't say how to find out.
