Year related plate from donor car
I posted this on Piston Heads . I was told to post on this site as members must have asked this question.
I intend building a Kit car based on a Porsche 944. I have the donor vehicle on a Sorn. For 5 years
At the bottom of the VC5 under special note 2 it states this is a Non-Transferable Registration Number.
Can i use this number on the completed kit?.
If not would i get a Q plate or a year related plate based on the year of the donor vehicle.
I intend to use the vehicle on the road so it will have to pass the IVA
I intend using all of the mechanicles from the donor vehicle.
I will design and build a chassis (TUB)

A donor registration would never be retained anyway. You would get an age related plate, ie a new plate but based on the same age identifier as the
donor. Ie if its a Dreg, you would get a different D reg.
If you wanted to keep the number plate you would have to transfer it off (car would need MoT) put it on retention then transfer it to the new car once
IVAd and registered. However as you V5 has got the note that its non transferable you cant. The only time I have had that note added to a car is when
I've transferred a personal plate too that car, and back off again. The old reg was reinstated but the note was it was non transferable. You can
still put a personal plate on the car, but the other reg is unusable on any other car.

Replys on Pistonhead said the car would have to be 'Q' plated because the chassis was not made by a Specialist Kit Car manufacturer. So
sent a letter to DVLA posing the question
Letter back from DVLA . Information book (INF 26) page 7 states 1. A vehicle will keep the registration number of the original vehicle if the original
UNALTERED chassis / monocoque bodyshell has been used along with TWO other major components from the original vehicle.
2.If a NEW monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit maunfacturer (or an altered chassis or bodyshell from an existing vehicle) is used
with two original major components from the donor vehicle, a replacement registration number will be issued based on the age of the donor vehicle. The
vehicle must have IVA or MSVA. The date of manufacture for the vehicle will be taken from the IVA or MSVA certificate.
Where insufficient parts from a donor vehicle are used or in cases where the original registration is unknown IVA/MSVA will be required and a
'Q' prefix registration will be allocated.
Is there a Registered list of Specialist Kit car manfacturers (as in 2) or could i have my chassis built by a high class Fabrication company who have
all of the qualifications in Welding and Fabrication?

Many people have achieved age related plates on home made chassis.
Just prepare a 'reciept' for the chassis from a specialist fabrication firm.

yep, pretty much what I intend to do. with a significant number of kit car manufacturers popping up and disappearing, it would be virtually impossible
to prove the source of a receipt.

yep, pretty much what I intend to do. with a significant number of kit car manufacturers popping up and disappearing, it would be virtually impossible

The DVLA seem to struggle with their own paperwork, I doubt they'll be coming on here anytime soon!

Time scale
How long do i have to keep the donor vehicle?( I have had it on SORN for over 5 years). Do VOSA inspect it prior me starting to strip it, if not do i
cut out and retain the the VIN number?

I hope they don't inspect it, the only thing left of my donor is the VIN plate and whatever parts I want to use!! The shell has long since
departed.
Make sure when you dispose of the shell that you DON'T get it officially scrapped, otherwise the VIN becomes useless.
I've had my bits on SORN for about two years now I think.

Take some photos if it as you break the bits off, showing the plate. Date stamp them if you really wanna make it clear. I cut the vin and chassis
number off, and kept the v5. I weighed the shell in in 1/6ths after cutting it up.
