Grinding the nose off a Crank, in Situ?
Hi
Need a bit of help or inspiration.. or just to find out it's an engine strip down job..
VW 2.0 16v Engine - crank at flywheel end has a conical protrusion, does nothing in the installation it should be going in.. and on the engine
that's coming out it's been ground off.
Engine is fully built ready to drop in, just found that this cone has to go..
Anybody any ideas?

Yup, that's my thought but using a flap grinding disc in the angle grinder and lots of little goes to avoid too much heat and lots of protection
all over the place..
But there's probably a really good reason why this is a really bad idea - just I don't know what it is

Being at the centre of rotation should not unbalance the engine if you remove it evenly.
A grinding disk or coarse flapper wheel to remove it. The crank is a sizeable chunk of steel so you are unlikely to get the crank so hot it melts
the seal. Do it in a few seconds bursts, check how hot the end is then adjust. You could use water or oil to cool but that will contaminate the
discs so best allow it to cool by itself, it is not as you are in a hurry.
. Secondly think how you collect the ground off metal and abrasive dust from the disc. Use something to mask off the area, a wet sheet ought to do it.
