Mondeo 1.8 locost

I want to build a locost from my 1.8 P reg Mondeo estate. Mechanically it's all sound. I know I need a rwd gearbox,clutch propshaft etc. But can I use brakes, wheels etc. from Mondeo? What really concerns me is emmissions regs. Can I use standard,injection system etc? Has anyone out there used a 1.8 Zetec? I'd like to use this donor as I know it's history but is it worthwhile?

1.8 zetec is my next weapon of choice, if you get a type 9 gearbox (from sierra) you will be sorted. not sure however on the brakes side of things, i have used discs and calipers off a sierra - im guessing mondeo ones are unsuitable, as people are still using sierra ones.
wheels shouldnt be a problem, you should be fine with the mondeo ones.

emmission wise, there is a certain age engine before which(someone will correct me here) emmissions are not so much of a problem - i think its '95.

my approach is to use the sierra engine until registered, get a age related plate, then upgrade to zetec next xmas.

By all means use the engine and as much as possible, but you'll need a Sierra for diff, rear drive shafts etc anyhow.

You'll be surprise how little from the Mondeo you'll end up using

As it's a P-reg, you'll also need to fit a CAT if you're going down this route as you'll need to meet modern emissions.

As said you will end up using very little of the Mondeo. The cost of buying a good Sierra for most of the donor parts is low, and engines are £2-£300 for a good one for a 1.8 or 2.0 zetec which if pre95 makes life easier due to emissions. Keep the Mondeo for lugging the other parts about during the build!

As everyone has said most of the kits on the market are Sierra based. So in order to have a kit that you can almost bolt together your best bet is to have a sierra donor aswell. Otherwise you'll just end up making so many custom parts it'll blow your mind.

I started my MK by getting a sierra donor, its only an extra £200-500. Obviously for a car at this price you'll have to put money towards reconditioning parts aswell. The running gear of the Sierra is simple but most importantly rwd. I then decided to get rid of my DOHC engine as it was too big to put in so i've got another escort 1.8 zetec donor.

What locost are you wanting to build?

I'm planning to build the original Locost =7 style. It's looking like Sierra is the way to go. But what chassis mods are required to original design cos it's bound to be wider. Or is it better to still use escort axle. Getting car registered and fitting the Zetec engine later seems like a reasonable idea.

If you're looking at going zetec post SVA, then it may be worth going down the CVH route when you first build the car.

If you want to use the Sierra Diff etc the GTS (amongst others) do a Dedion setup for a book chassis.
