Newbie needing to learn
Hi guys. Just starting to research about building a kit (Im think mnr, mac1, mk, 7 based kit) so go easy on me...
When you buy a deluxe starter kit, you must also have a donor car ready is that correct?
If so, I realise that most require sierra parts? Does the sapphire carry the same parts needed, to rob for the kits?

Yes, you'll still need a sierra !
Sapphire is ok.... you might still need to find a non power steering rack if it's got one.
Also depends what engine/gearbox combo you want.
It'll probably have rear discs which is nice. The diff, once again depends on engine you decide on

Hey Tom... welcome to the Mad House! Hope you find us informative and helpful.
You don't necessarily need the donor car ready as it depends mainly upon your engine choice - Bike Engine or Car Engine. Most bits could be
sourced part by part from the wreckers but obviously this depends on your space (and partner  )
Basically you need a non-PAS steering rack, and associated bits. IIRC the sapphire has drums and non-LSD. If you want disc's on the rear
you'll need higher spec cars ie XR4x4, XR4i and the like. Your best bet is to go for the lowest spec sierra as it will have non-PAS and
Hubs/front uprights, Prop etc that you need.
Although a pretty typical 3.62 diff is ok for a car it's too short for a BEC a 318 seems better suited.
Have a trip to MK or other manufacturer and have a go in a few cars to get a feel for them... have a look at our website (currently under major
re-construction) but it gives you an idea what is required. There are also video's to give you a taste of what's to come in a BEC! (Bike
Engined car!)

Does a bike engine car still use the gearbox from the bike?
Ideally if I was to buy a MK, BEC (Check me with the lingo!) what would be the best donor car?
And for a cost issue would it be just as cheap to buy parts rather than a full car to strip?

Yes it still uses the bike gearbox, it depends how cheap you can get a sierra.. probably be cheaper to get a whole car, just depends on price really.

A cheap 2nd hand sierra will literally cost you pennies...
Strip the bits you need, sell the rest and scrap the leftovers...
If you're after a BEC I can do you a 2004 ex Paul Young BSB R1 motor for £1600...

You can buy the donor parts already stripped from the car if you don't want a rusty sierra taking up space at home. This is a great idea if you
are building a BEC as do don't want the sierra's engine or gearbox. You can even buy the donor parts fully reconditioned if you want.
MNR will supply you with donor parts, as will other kit makers. There are specialist companies that will do it for you, such as kitfit-parts.co.uk or
donorspares.co.uk.
You can even buy parts on here from time to time. I did. I neither had the space, time or inclination to strip a few parts from a car, though
it's probably worth while if you are using the whole car as a donor.

Im in Preston guys. My Dad is an engineer so Im going to ask him if he wants to help out with, he also has a massive garage and a big drive.

hi mate
hope this helps you may want to print this off
Im building A BEC(bike engine car)
1. read peoples build manuals online, the ones from the kit car manafacturers is 
hellfires is good so is OX's and if you do a search on google for dodgy roger he has one to..
2.. disc brakes all round looks good but sierras with disc brakes(rear) are getting rare and the value will go up slightly.. also most likely
everything on the front of these sierras is useless as they have power steering and/or they are 4 wheel drive like the xr4x4i which I have broke on my
drive these also have an LSD diff which some people swear by some dont think its that neccessary unless your a track junkey!
3. go and be took out in some of the different cars before you buy!
I have purchased an MK the other makes are great to! but each to there own..
4..mark out your budget do you want og car engine(which is still fun) or do you want to go bike engine (youll understand when you go out in one
thats all I can say!)
5. buy a starter kit from your manafacturer youve decided on!
get building!
you need the following from a sierra
rear diff axle drive shafts , rear hubs ,rear callipers and discs (get new ones when the time comes!) or drums whichever sierra you go for!
handbrake mechanism and new cable.
then off the front of a bog standard sierra not four wheel wheel drive..
front hubs discs callipers steering rack column and link bar and a master brake cylinder!
remember bike engines have the gearbox built in, a gear linkage needs making which is I believe a bit of a task but nothing that bad!
youll learn more as you go along !
insurance is very cheap even when young

It is often said that drum brakes and push in drive shafts are lighter than disc brakes and are more than adequate for stopping a BEC. If you do want
discs then lots of people make brackets so that you can mount a caliper onto a "drum brake" hub so don't worry if you can't
find a rear drum car.
Non vented sierra front discs are lighter than the vented ones, obviously, so it might be worth looking out for some of those unless you are seriously
going racing.
This is where buying the bits is better than buying a whole car - you can have the back of a diesel and the front off a 1.6 etc...
