escort rear axle.

How much power can these take? Iwas going to do an IRS set up, but "the best laid plans etc" so might just go for a book design. Except my donor engine is a ca18det with about 250 odd bhp. Will the old diff ruin itself? Thanks in advance

Depends -- is it english or salsbury ?

English is weaker however with that much power I would sugest get yourself at least a 2 litre Cortina or a 2litre Capri axle (nb not the Mk1 Capri english type) or better still a V6 Capri axle.

Note 1300 and most 1600 Cortina axles are weaker than the 2/2.3 litre type.

Its torque that kills diffs and gearboxs not necessarily power, as the power comes in high up the rev range so spreading the load.

I put the same question to Will Holman of Practical Performance Car. He's had lots of experience with Escorts and the running gear and reckoned that given the weight of a Seven clone you are more likely to spin the rear wheels than break the diff - good enough for me. Cheers Pewe.

HI a good axle with a properly built diff not just reconed will ussualy be good for 200hp. It all depends on the type of tyres lsd if fitted and the amount of anti-squat if there is any in the desighn. But as said above will ussualy spin wheels first or break halfshaft.

If you are going above 200hp you need to be looking at quaif parts but be prepaird to spend anything up to £1000.

you may get away with standard axle 250hp and road tyres with no anti-squat and smooth driving.

cheers matt

the light weight of super 7 design is good thing the axel will do 250bhp , but do not try to put slick or drag race tyres , that can affect it vary much .... Friend of mine Killed the Transmition on his Scooby after 5000miles with nitto drag slicks in every day use... but he is loaded and don;t care
