Newbie question - Donor Car issues?

Afternoon Chaps

I’m new to the group having migrated from Pistonheads - so a big hello to you all !

I have had a good trawl through the archives but am looking for some knowledge on the keeping (and disposing) of Donor Cars.

I think I have got a fairly clear idea of what is involved in the whole process, but I wondered if there are any particular problems in retaining a car logbook and V5 for a long period (even though the car shell itself will be long gone). Naturally, I will doing all the usual tasks like retaining the chassis stamp (by cutting it off the shell) all i.d plates etc..etc..

I suppose to keep the ‘car’ legal at this stage, you just keep declaring the car as SORN until time comes to submit to SVA ?

My other concerns are if you get any grief for disposing of the ‘unidentified’ shell? This appears not to be a particular problem, but any help on this general topic would be very useful before I start hunting down an old Sierra!

Many thanks

Richard

Hi Richard & welcome, I think you'll find this site a lot more helpful than pistonheads, I certainly do!

You've got it all basically correct, I don't see any prob with continueing to declare Sorn after the shell has gone & as long as you've retained the chassis plate which matches the hole in the shell & a copy of the V5 can't see how you could have a prob with disposing of an "identityless" shell.

Good luck with your build.

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Welcome to the site Dickie

It is a bit of a grey area, but here is what I did.

Bought a Sierra off ebay for £75. Registered it in my name, kept the new V5 safe! Cashed in the un-used portion of the tax (£25), declared it SORN. Dismantled it, keeping the VIN plate, cutting out the chassis number with a grinder, took the number plates off it. This all happened over a number of weeks / months.

Finished stripping the donor, phoned a local scrappy, he came round smashed his HIAB down into the middle of the roof, all windows went, he picked it up onto the flatbed and gave me £15, no questions asked guvn'r.

Kept declaring the donor as SORN during the build. A year later pass the SVA, turn up at the local DVLA office with the vin plate, V5 and the lump of chassis from the donor, all my reciepts and my MAC. They declared the car as scrapped, then allocated me an age related plate.

No real problems with it at all.

In my experience.

Cheers

Mike

and good luck with the build!

Welcome,
I did exactly what Guinness did, except I didn't get £15
I had no problems.
Steve.

Just to rub it in, I also managed to sell all the lights on ebay, got two full cans of fuel out of the tank (even though the gauge was below red) for the wifes car, I also managed to get a crate of beer for the Pinto engine that originally powered my donner!

Cheers

Mike

I got over £90 back on my donor selling unwanted parts. I have just re-SORNed it again. No questions were asked when teh shell was taken away, the council took mine and I signed to say i would declare it scrapped, but obviously haven't got round to it yet. DVLA advised me to keep the V5 and declare sorn until i have completed the build.

I just kept the Vin plate, and the V5, and declared it SORN. Cost me £25 to get rid of my shell, Grrrrrr! Mind you payed £175 for the doner, but got £225 back, selling all the bit I didn't want on Ebay, so all in all not a bad deal. Cheers, Ray

To make a car go faster, just add lightness. Colin Chapman - OR - fit a bigger engine. Chippy
