Abandoned 1.6 c reg sierra
Theres a red c reg 1.6 sierra (should be a pinto) abandoned on the dual carriageway just outside Horsham, west sussex. just before the morefield
roundabout going towards crawley.

Now, here's a topic I was goin' to post about. If you see an abandoned motor and, living in Peterborough which seems to be car abandonment
central there are plenty, can you just roll up with a trailer and swipe it? Does it still belong to the previous owner and would you have any probs
with registration documents and so forth?

The best approach is this:
if it has no road tax, call the law and tell them you want to salvage it. They should try to contact the registered keeper, if they cant then try to
register it to yourself. When you apply for a V5 they will try to contact the current keeper anyway, so technically you dont even need the police, but
if it turned out not to be dumped you might get done for fraud or something.
If it has road tax then theres nothing anyone can do to move it, unless its a hazard.
The local council should be keen for you to remove it anyway, so cant be too hard.
They may just follow usual procedures for tax less cars and then give it ot you rather than crushing it.

If you swipe it then the engine number or reg plate may end up recorded stolen. Some cars may appear dumped but justb have idle owners, ie my pal who
leaves his in the pub car park for a month...!

or you could take it in the stealth of night, remove number and vin plates, change the engine number from one thats in aa scrappy and register the
kitcar as a q plate but using the stripped sierra parts*
*not recommended, but a possibilty.

You put an ad in your local paper, or sweet shop window, reading as follows :
"Wanted, MOT failure sierra. Taken away for free by enthusiast."
You will be the answer to someones prayer, who just found out its gonna cost em to have it taken away!
However, you might save yourself a lot of expense by buying a known good car from an auction, or jalopy car dealer. A car with a smoky engine is gonna
cost you.
Contacting the police to get a dumped car with no V5 is making life hard, and taking bits from it could get you nicked. As far as the police will be
concerned, the car may still have an owner.

Thanks for the replies lads, as i thappens I don't have to worry anymore. I asked my father-in-law and a mate at work if they knew of anyone
with a Sierra to burn (as it were). Haven't seen F-I-L but mate said "do you need the engine?", "no" replies me,
"in that case I do know a bloke with one". Turns out this guy's got a G reg 2.0 litre 5 speed, reasonable nick but starting to
suffer with tinworm and the timing belt had jumped/slipped. Got it sorted but car needs cash spending to tidy it up and replace cam belt. Guty buys
new car, Sierra sits unused. He's renewed suspension bushes, looked after the brakes and generally kept it in good working order. MINE FOR
NOWT!!!!!!!!! All he wanted was the spare tyre 'cos it was brand new and the battery. Jump started it, drove it home with absolutely no problems
and no transmission noise. Me is as chuffed as a very chuffed thing!
The final bit and one might say the best, this guy is a machinist by trade and has his own workshop behind his house. He's got a decent pillar
drill, a capstan and 3 conventional lathes, a universal mill and he says "if you ever need any bits making, let me know and i'll sort
'em out"! There is a God, I am now convinced.

I did try chasing up with one Sierra I saw as I fancied the whole thing. What I was told by the Police was that DVLA could write to the owner and pass

The two flaws in this I can see being that the person who dumps the car isn't likely to bother writing to you and also most of the time

crushed! Moving a car isn't theft atleast- just Taking and Driving Away which I guess is somewhat a lesser crime!
