Scrapping donor

The time has long gone to scrap the rusting hulk of a car that I have at the side of the house! It has been sorn for the last 18 months. My question is this, what do I have to tell the DVLA before/during/after weighing the car in? Do I have to take the V5 to the scrap merchants?

Do I need to retain the number? If so how? And does it cost to do this?

Don't give the scrap man anything! keep it on sorn even though you don't have the shell, remove all id plates including the one in floor angry grinder soon whips that one out and then just keep them

VIN has been removed already. However I took some scrap in the other week and asked the question and I have to leave the plates in the shell. Apparently this is a police request.

So Ill keep the vehicle SORN then even though the shell has been cubed. Thatll keep the Mrs happy.

You can leave the reg plates in the car if you want as you wouldn't be allocated that number on your self build car anyway, it would be an age related plate if thats the way you are going.

Personally I would take the vin plates out and tell em to go and boil their head, I wouldn't want any to55er walking into the scrap yard whizzing off the vin plate sticking it on another motor all the time it's on sorn in my name thankyou very much!

As above really. Keep the VIN plates and keep the car on sorn until you've finished the build

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Vin plates & number plates retained. Body shell scrapped by a reputable local scrappy. A receipt for the body shell given to me when they took possession of shell and a photo of them taking it away. After that, just keep sorning.

Keep all documents and plates.
Keep it on SORN.
take metal to scrap metal merchant not scrap yard, and get reciept for shell.
This will prove ownership of all the parts on the car.
Prove that you have disposed of the remainder properly.
and keep the continuous registration people off your back once you stop SORN when you have a new reg for the Kit
I have spent 8 months arguing with continuous registration over a scrapped car, finaly won but cost me £40 penalty.

Sorry guys, slightly ambiguous post. I didnt mean they want the VIN plates in the car. What they told me was the number plates had to be on the car as the police request it.

Thanks for the info.

Don't worry about keeping the number plates, they are of no use to you. Just hang on to the VIN plates and the V5 and keep SORNing 'til you are ready to register the kit.

well

i scrap cars often. so really, depends what you are wanting. if yo are going the Q reg way, then you dont need the plates/vin or V5. so easier to jst give the lot to the scrappy and he will issue a disposal certificate, then no more worries about sorn etc.
some scrappys will not take a car withot the V5, but others do. best to ask on the phone, tell them yo have a shell etc that needs to be scrapped but you have lost the V5, see what there policy is.

i get away with no V5 as go to the same one often, but private people can sometimes be refused, but would have to be a real jobs worth to do that! as they jst pt it down as scrap metal on the receipt........

so, Q plate give them the V5 etc.

keeping the reg on the locost, then you need all the numbers, plates and V5.

simple really........

fuckit

Thanks guys.
Really just trying to keep my options open. I think the car may well go onto a new plate, but want to keep options on a Q or the F of the donor.
