No single pipe.
Martin, I think that was the P6
I've had two SD1 V8's. First in 1985, second in 1990. Superb cars. I still reckon they are the most comfortable crs I've ever
owned.
If it's a diesel, buy it and restore. They are an extremely rare car. Not the quickest diesel.
If you do get one, buy Karen Penders book on it. Great read, full of interesting facts. My fave was when one of police forces were looking to replace
the P6, and had to pick amongst the SD1, Grandad and others. The Granada was dimissed out of hand as it was made in Germany. How things have
changed.

later p6 rovers had bumps in the bonnets, sd1 were all the same panels except for bigger bumpers on high spec ones.
straight 6's suffered from cam issues, they siezed, 2.4d was a powerful VM engine for he time but suffered head issues (4 head gaskets, engine
was also used in Turbo D rangerovers) and the 2litre was underpowered.
V8 mate is the only engine for these, same economy as the rest but cheap and reliable to fix.
Like Simon I had a couple as well, both manual v8's cracking cars, big roomy with great handling. Also surprisingly fast, better than my mates
escorts and 205gti pugs, although only costing a thousand pounds then.

I can't think of anything good to say about them
The third worst car in the world, only Chrysler 180 and the Polski Fiat 125P beat it.
Build quality wasn't just bad it was shameful for example the shape of doors wasn't anything like the shape of the door apertures
All the design details were badly bodged..
To put the performance into perspective the normal 3.5 carb V8 was slower than the 2 litre Rover 820Sli MPi that replaced it.

So an SD1 is better around corners than a 205 gti acclaimed as one of the best handling cars along with the golf GTi and such like. Thats quite a bold
statement.
I like the Rover SD1 and apparently they were quite good round a race track.

To say the SD1 was the third worst car ever is a very biased opinion. You are talking about a car which won the British and European Touring Car
Championships, was pretty successful in rallying, won Car of the Year, was styled to look like the Ferrari Daytona and regularly beat BMW 5 series in
road tests. Sure, there were some build quality issues, but fundamentally it was a good car.
Drove one about a month ago and it is still a good car to drive. OK, the one I drove was one of the last 50 built, a twin plenum Vitesse which is a
bit quicker than most, but still very comfortable, fast and with good handling. Plus a great noise! That particular car has done 140k miles and
started life on the Rover press fleet so not always had an easy life, but it has been pampered for many years by the current owner (my Dad!). I have
driven other lower power SD1's and they all have appeal, I learned to drive in a 2.3 many years ago. The V8 is the one to have though.

A Rover fan would probably pay good money for that (depending on the condition)- plenty of V8 engines onm ebay, too.
If it is a Diesel, a 2000 or any series one (Recessed headlights and a round-dial dash are the main giveaways)the Don't scrap it. They are
becoming rare and (slightly) more valuable.
If it is a solid car, again, don't scrap it. If it is terminally rotten then break it, but sell all of the spares to Rover people.
My Dad had a Vitesse some time ago. Lovely car, let down by the build quality (And the awful Lucas EFI. Who let Joe Lucas loose with elecrics in the
forst place?).
The SD1 club website has a forum where you can sell things. Free to sign up.
James
P.s. Can you tell I'm a fan yet?
