Donor registration retention
Im sure is a subject thats been touched on a million times.
It was my understanding that the points system applied to kitcars (ie 5 for body, 2 for suspension etc etc.) but looking on direct.gov.uk its seems
that this is for 'radically altered vehicles'
So i assume a typical locost would come under the 'Kit Conversions catagory'
Where i just require to keep two major components from a donor vehicle, to keep the age related reg.
What is classed as a major component?
engine?
transmission?
axels? (does that mean driveshafts or the hubs/suspension units?, if not can i assum i cant count them)
If I replace my donor engine with another make will i need to register it with the donor and swap it afterwards?

Thats what I did. Registered a new 2l engine in place of the knacvkered 1600 before sending the documentation to DVLA.
Averything went through fine and I got an age related plate

You can get an age related plate without using the engine from the donor vehicle. There are enough points in the major components to qualify.

Just for clarification, all you need to qualify for an age related plate is the donor V5 and two of the following major components from the donor;
Chassis/Body Shell
Axles
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine
Suspension (front and back)
These descriptions are rather vague and open to interpretation.
Say for example you use the diff, shafts, brakes, uprights, steering rack, steering column and propshaft from the donor vehicle, you should easily
qualify for an age related plate because you have the following three major components;
Axles
Transmission
Steering Assembly
This leaves you free to fit whatever engine you like.

K plates were the last I know of.
Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

This reminds me of something I meant to ask here weeks ago... Was chatting about my planned build with a fellow nut, mentioned my plan to go age
related then stick a private plate on - he told me that you can't get a private plate on a age related registration, the same as with Q plates -
I may have muttered bovine excrement under my breath, but he was adamant that was the case - he is wrong.... isn't he?!

Yep, of course you can. I doubt that most inspectors would know the difference between Sierra and Granada parts anyway.

he is - with one proviso.
You can't make the car look newer than the donor with a private plate, this is true of any number plate transfer.
For example if your age related plate is a "D" reg you can't put a "G" plate on or a "51" or even an
"08" your private plate must have been issued in the same registration period as your donor/age related plate, or before.
One exception to this are the Irish plates you can buy (They're usually full of Z's) and aren't date specific.

aye that's as I understood it for "normal" cars and had assumed to be the case - fortunately my plate would be a D reg and the donor
considerably later.

I wouldnt say full... they have to have at least one 'I' or one 'Z' in them
