I wondered why he had gone quiet!
He's probably trying to keep that number up for every one to see!

(Preface this with: This is not related to Allan.)

That brings up something I've wondered about... why do forums have a count at all? The assumption is that it implies wisdom and knowledge... but it doesn't. It simply shows how much the person types. Unless you search, you can't tell if the person has been on the forum for years, or if they just sit and type all day. What's the point? I know for a fact some people just post *anything* simply to run the number up. That's useful.

It reminds me of a quote from Napoleon. Someone had mentioned his generals had a lot of experience. Napoleon pointed out that his donkeys had been in more wars, did that make them more valuable because they had more "experience" then his generals? Being there doesn't count. Experience doesn't count unless something is learned and later used.

If a count must be displayed, it would be far, far, more helpful if that number represented something useful, like "Was this post helpful," where readers could vote on the post. Only then does it mean anything.

Obviously in Allan's case he does have the knowledge and wisdom, but that has nothing to do with post counts.
