Enclosed chain drive ?
Chet - 20/9/09 at 05:34 AM

I'm interested in using the quaife chain drive for a Hayabusa powered mid engined car.

Has anyone fully enclosed the entire assembly including the chain and sprockets?

I've had several Yamaha XV920s (US version of TR1) and their fully enclosed chain provided very long life with almost no adjustment required.

Any experience or opinions?

Thanks
Chet

An option for a fully enclosed drive could be the Radical's (Quaife) gear drive differential.

Not cheap but should tick all the boxes...

I've considered the Radical gear drive diff but it's my understanding that the reliability issues / complexity ( Radical now offer an additional oil pump for it ), lower efficiency vs chain, and especially the additional length required make it less desireable.

There is another successful gear drive unit made by DJ Racecars.

Thanks for the DJ contact. I've emailed them for specs.

There website doesn't list any diff pics or info.

PS - Still think a fully enclosed chain would work well

Have a look at Dennis Palatov's site. www.dpcars.net
His 4wd Busa powered single seater uses chain drive and while not hermetically sealed, is fairly enclosed.

I believe he used Quaife sealed diffs.
