Mid-engine...
Jim C - 16/8/04 at 12:23 AM

Hello, My name is Jim and I live in Tucson, Arizona, USA. I have been building a "Locost" type car, but I am thinking about my next project already. I would like to know where I may find any information pertaining to a mid-engined design, most likely with a Honda car drive train. I would appreciate any information or pointers as to where to start on a project like this. My Locost should be finished in a few months, as soon as the temps drop below 100f again, I will be getting more motivated to finish it. Thanks.

Hi Jim,

If you're ever up North Phoenix (Cause Phoenix Metro is about as large as Germany...) -- you are welcome to come by and take a look at the project.

Steve Graber

Jim C - 16/8/04 at 06:07 PM

Yes Iain, it is me. Thank you Steve for the offer to see your project. I posted a reply resterday, but don't see it on the screen. I will see if this one goes through....

I wanted to try something with a Honda car drive train as they are plentiful, popular and easy to get performance parts for. I would even like to see if there is a market for something like that. Rescued attachment car

Just as an experinent, I tried posting a photo of my project, and it worked!

"Phoenix Metro as large as Germany?"
Before,during or after WWII?

derf - 17/8/04 at 12:44 AM

Yes... It's a bit freaking hot right now though... maybe later in the season? 2 months from now?

And of course I exagerated the size of Phoenix Greater Metro. It's a mere 2,000 square miles. Germany is about 140,000 square miles.... But the State of Arizona is the size of Germany!

derf - 17/8/04 at 02:49 AM

Hey as long as your A/C is good there is no problem.

Yeh them funny Europeans think so small, we could fit like a bazzillion of their countries in ours.

Cita - 17/8/04 at 06:14 AM

S.Graber rate of exageration:70
Derf rate of exageration:redicilous

derf - 17/8/04 at 01:45 PM

Ok, a bazzillion is kinda a big number, does eleventy billion sound better?

Not to get too far off subject.... Steve, your car is very nice, along the lines of what I would like to try. But I would like to try using a Honda drive train. Sounds like the Kimini is doing just that. Now, If I could only combine the 2... This is all just in the preliminary idea stage, as I need to finish my Locost type car first. About the only Honda car engined middies I think I've seen are the Kimini and the Ariel Atom.

I like to think that my car is 'engine agnostic'. It doesn't really matter what engine you stick back there. The only major issues to solve are engine mounts and shifter and those are not major problems at all. There is room for all types of engines back there. That's one of the benefits of having a 96" wheelbase.

At some point, my neighbor will be building a La Bala and he intends on using an Integra GS-R 1.8 engine.

Sven - your name is actually Steve? you're kidding right?

About the only problem with the Honda would be adapting some type of parking brake. I could try Chevette spindles in the front, as it has the same 4X100 bolt pattern for the wheels.

Wilwood makes a spot parking brake (mechanical) that addresses this issue. I have also thought that the little mechanical go-kart brakes (available cheap through ebay) might be adapted pretty easily too. And the Chevette spindles would be just fine. Pinto, chevette, S-10, adapted mcPhereson... Lots of choices.

Hey Sven, we should get together sometime.
