Ib5 gearbox venting oil
I predict a Riot - 28/7/12 at 06:41 PM

The gearbox on my Ford Sigma 1.7l ex Puma engine is venting oil all over my lovely new engine bay!

The engine sits slightly more upright in the J16 than it would of in the original car but it does seem odd that it's behaving like this.

I have cut down the breather pipe - the part that dips into the gearbox and this has improved the situation.

Do I run the gearbox with less oil than Ford state or fit a longer breather?

Any ideas welcome.

Adrian

Has it just started doing this or has it been doing it for a while? I've got the 1.7 in my Mojo, mounted almost dead vertical, and have had no oil escape from the box for the last 2 years. The filler for mine is on the front side of the gearbox, and I'm using the Ford black plastic breather.

Burton says this box takes 2.8 litres which sounds about right to me.

Is it overfilled? Is the oil too thin?

Ed.

It's got the correct oil and exactly 2.8l in it. Or it has now as I drained it to check the amount left in it. It hadn't lost too much maybe 100ml to 200ml but that much oil sprayed over the engine bay makes a right mess.

The car has only recently been finished so the engine and box hadn't been run for at least two years.
