Machining ball joint taper?
turbo time - 7/10/04 at 05:35 PM

Hey,

Well, I have my suspension all ready to go together, but have one thing left to do: figure out how/where to make the taper on the strut adaptor for the ball joint to slide into. Here is the ball joint I'm using, which will be on the upper A-arm (Very 1st one on the page K-5208): http://www.stockcarproducts.com/susp7.htm

So, do I need to go to somone with a lathe and give them the ball joint so they can machine a tapered hole? or is there some reason they wouldn't have the ability to do that? Such as the cutting bit being unable to fit in such a small space? I have only used a brake lathe, so pardon my ignorance. (unless anyone here can do it at a very discounted price )

Thanks

a boring bar the machinist may need to order, or fabricate a tapered reamer.

For that matter you could ream the hole if you know the degree of taper.

You can do it yourself, buy a reamer assuming you know the size (measure the ball joint taper to figure it out.) You'll very likely pay someone else more to do it then buying the tool and doing it yourself.

Anyone got a picture of such a mythical tool. Went to Cromwell and described what I wanted to do, but all I gained was the knowledge that three people with entirely dissimilar facial features are capable of forming identical bemused looks without studying the faces of those surrounding them.

would be very dificult to machine such a small diameter hole, so the guys are right you want a reamer, best place to start is to mesure the angle
of the taper if your lucky it will be a no1 morse taper. as youl have know problem getting a reamer.
you could try tracy tools in dartmouth devon.
sorry lost ther catalogue at the mo

As an example, the circle track guys use them:

Look for "ball joint reamer."

Also try that search string in Google.

Taper boring is easy...any decent machinist can do it that small...
