While working on my Duratec today to go in my 7 - I was thinking about the popularity of the engine in other forms but I couldn't think of a
kit/home build that had been built using a Duratec/Mondeo gearbox/drivetrain. I would have thought the supply of old Mondeos is plentiful and plenty
of scope for engine upgrades.
Anyone know if such a car has been built?
There is a chap sticking a supercharged one into a Midlana (scratch built midi locost). Ive bought one for a midlana as well but I am torn between the turbo zetec I am playing with, the duratec or the 3.0 v6 duratec or something els.

I'm suprised there aren't more already as the 750 sports special regs dictate use of the engine as per the Eclipse. There is the FRS arrow
that the club is pushing but it uses the Fiesta drive train.

Midlana style would be the way I'd go personally.
Thanks for the links, some interesting cars there - that is quite a chain drive setup on the eclipse.
Just looked at the Midlana site - very impressive and a really good looking car
Has ayone built one ? Has anyone got the book ? - is it worth the £61 cost ? Is it easy to convert to UK spec ?
(rhd and Uk engines/running gear)
I've got the book and paid full whak.
It's very worth it, "IF" your going to build one. It's a dear one to sit on the shelf though.
I am collecting the parts and plan on starting the chassis in the spring.
Two points, in my opinion it is very over engineered and all the book dimensions are imperial.
There is a guy on here building already. And three or four else where in the world. It's going to be a very exclusive build.
Donor parts are very very cheap at the moment much like the mk2 escort when the first locost book came out.

i have got the book all the measurements are in imperial. other than that its spot on. much more detail than any of the haynes ones have
I've got the book paid £32 for it through Lulu. Being imperial doesn't bother me (cause that was what it was when I was at school)
Its my next build when i get round to it and I'm planning on a BAM 225 engine out of a Leon Cupra or Audi TT. Stage 1 remap on these motors is
270bhp
Thanks for the mentions Big Wasa.. Yep I'm currently building a Midlana, got a build thread on the Midlana site if anyone is interested.
Though I'm not doing information overload or going too technical with the posts, as I'm from a non engineering background and also fed up
with the armchair critics and keyboard warriors,.. it is what it is...
Posted a few images before of the engine one below.. Mated to a Mazda 3 MPS 6 speed gearbox with standard slipper, good for 350bhp all day though a
bit sensitive to oil types (IB5 from the fester is made of butter)
JK composites seats, willwood 6 pots front 4 pots rear, brembo handbrake calipers. escort fast rack and probably protech shocks (inboard) TD 1.2
17"s.. 7" on front 9" on back. Renault scenic steering column
Not done anything for a little while as I'm doing a wetroom. (not touched the house for a good while because of my previous build (v-storm) So
banking some brownie points for a sustained effort soon.
Hi
Believe there are a couple of Sylva J15s that are Duratecs

That's a shame, although yours isn't a page by page book build I still keep looking for updates and inspiration.
I think there is about twice the fabrication of a traditional locost and It took me ten years to finish.

BTW the 3.0 V6 route is the way I would go if doing it again, with Jenveys and a aftermarket ECU, rumour has it should be good for around 300bhp. The engine bay is better suited for a V6 imo. I've had to extend the engine bay a little to accomodate the plenum and the gearbox with wasted space under the plenum
