right chaps, ive got the sides conected together front n rear, what does the panel think about diagonal bracing for the cockpit floor,do i need 12 feet of tube in an X across the floor or will braces in each corner do????
Before we answer that, we need to know whether or not you are having a central tunnel
On behalf of the panel
John
central tunnel,no maybee something to keep the passenger from laying all over me but nothing structral.
I'm only guessing here, but a whole cockpit floor seems like a big area and sorely in need of some substantial bracing. Well it's not really guessing
more like intuition.
I'm planning a central tunnel in mine, it will be useful for the gearchange and plumbing, and somehow just feels right
John
need something to stop the floor flapping so looks like ill put some sort of tunnel in,that will stop the flap, then small diags in each corner.
Technically speaking just one diagonal is enough to triangulate an open rectangle.
However, the two diagonals may be more practical, or indeed a tunnel.
I ended up with a backbone and seat rails in mine.....no triangulation as such, however the floor will serve that purpose.
Hi guys, I thought I'd join this group as well and see what's happening.
My tuppence worth on the bracing issue: You're probably going to need somewhere to mount the gearlever and handbrake so you might as well have a
(small) tunnel and enjoy the bracing advantages. That's what I'll do, with welded-in floorpans that have seat rails folded into to further increase
rigidity.

Hi Dominic,
I wondered when you would turn up here
It is a very useful section on a decent forum....so see you around then?...
looking at my rapidly decreasing pile of steel,i decided to go for corner braces only and a tunnel of sorts for the gear change and pipework etc,pix on bobs website when it comes back to life.

Hi Dominic,
I know what you mean about too many sources of info. I haven't been checking in here too often, but it appears that the list is starting to flesh out
a bit with good people who are more interested in building than in "Theory"... So maybe it's time start keeping track of what's happening here.
Besides, Alan is here, and that's reason enough to at least LURK! All hail the Meerkatmeister! hehehehe
