Audi quattro gearbox, convert to mid engine?

Does anyone know if the quattro gearbox can be altered so that it only provides drive to the front wheels (which would obviously be the rear wheels in a mid engine set-up)?

I guess if that's not possible it could be swapped for a front wheel drive (only) gearbox?

The answer is yes to both.

Plucking out the rear wheel drive bit is of course much harder than finding a FWD box.

Thanks for that Mark, is there any particular thread you would recommend, or is it just a matter of digging through.?

They are referring to the gearboxes by model type, and of course I don't know which is which (yet)

Thanks, but the gearbox in question is already fitted with a 1.8T. In fact, I wonder why anyone would want to convert to a zetec when the Audi engines are quite nice themselves

Why not pick up a fwd box or Reanalt unit and sell the Quatro one think you may make a bit of profit. Seems pointless breaking a good unit Plenty of VW nut out there who would buy it.

Ps got to agree about the vw unit I have the 1.8 turbo Golf as my evberyday but the zetec only costs around 20% of the golf unit so theres your answer

Audi's are 016, lots of them about the strong ones are from older 5 cylinder cars, later get up to six forward gears.

Audi = porche.... these go in boxsters etc

Lots on Ebay, I paid £50 for mine and that may be expensive !

I dug through the various threads on this the other day and the general consensus as I understood it is... yes, you can do it, but the gearbox wil eventually give up the ghost as it is greatly weakened.

PS - Bear in mind that this was in the context of fitting to high output V8's.

I've read the same in the context of doing it full stop! The 2WD box is much stronger.
