Anyone here used a gasless DIY Mig welder on a locost build?

And heres an update of my middy build:

Yes, would not touch it again. Now replaced with a gas one.
Why do you ask? From the picture it looks like you already have a welder.

I have worn out 3 of them. They are quite good for small jobs outside, very portable without the gas bottle and very fast to get jobs done. Especially good for doing exhaust repairs outside under a car when it’s windy. I recently did a repair to the digger on site and practically ended up with a tent just to stop the wind bowing the gas shield away, damn annoying and that would not have been required if I was using gasless.

Their main downside is the much greater heat, welds that need cleaned of slag and inclusions much like a small arc welder. I would not recommend them for doing a chassis, far too much heat.

I have used a gasless mig for my chassis (as well as an arc welder for some parts).
With practice it is possible to do strong welds that look ok when they are cleaned up. With hindsight I wish I had invested in a decent quality ordinary mig at the start of the build.

Surely "MIG" welding without the gas would just be "M" welding?

Ive used a gassless, and they are good for small jobs, but tempramental i found. Ive just invested in a 160A TIG for the next build, but ive still got to learn how to use it properly!!
There are a few plusses to TIG - It seems to be more diverse, and a lot cleaner!

I rented one once and now would avoid using one ever again!

If you are new to welding I think getting the best quality machine you can makes learning as easy as possible.

I found gasless to be perfectly acceptable not quite as good a finish but hardly noticeable once painted or sealed, I also found welding with CO2 gas to be pretty good as well, sorry to go against the flow but my mum always said I was special!

Cheers

reasons why not
1 to much heat.
2 poor penatration.
3 unsightly
4 fumes highly caslagenic
banned in many countries.
