Unsure if this is the correct place to post this, but as most of you on this section are building your own cars, then it is a good place to start.
Over the next couple of months i am doing a lot of CAD work, hopefully without having to buy the parts i am going to use in the final build.
I was thinking about using the ProTech alli shock, as i have used them before on my old westfield, and found them quite good, and they are light.
Has anyone got these? If so would you happen to know any rough dimensions so i could CAD them up
Your question is a bit 'how long is a piece of string' as there are lots of alternate dimensions to suit ones specific application.
As an example, I have shocks in use on my 'toy' vehicles which range from 18" open to 10" open and have spring sizes of 1.75"
and 2.25" which are the two main 'generic' sizes.
You can also get shocks which aren't adjustable, which are adjustable for bump and rebound on one adjustment or are separately adjustable for
both parameters. You can spend even more money and have different speed damping rates - very trick!
So - its a bit of a large area. In my lay opinion, plan for something like 14" open shock sizes as this is a good bench mark sort of size.
I do realise it was a bit of an open question....
What is meant by open length, is it the overall length of the shock with no weight on it.....
If i try and throw some figures into the mix, hopefully would give me a better idea of what the hell i am doing, to try and get an answer.... This is
all very new to me, so please bare with me if i seem stupid.
If the car is to sit 4" above the ground, and i would like the suspension to be able to move at most 3" in either direction.
If i had a shock with an open length of 14", i would be looking to get the length of the shock to be 11" at resting (if i got the spring
rate correct), and the bump stop would them bottom the spring out at 9", so the car would never hit the road....
I am just looking for how much room i need to accomodate the shock inboard, or a rough idea, so i can design the pivot point etcs.
Many thanks
