Her indoors has a 2.0 MX5 sport from new and rather trade in at a huge loss we (well I ) thought about supercharging or turbocharging. The car is in
mint condition and has a six speed gearbox and LSD as standard so seems worth extending its life.
However the aforementioned "indoors" will not tolerate a car that is not fully sorted so I'm looking for a fully proven kit.
Anyone any experience of forced induction kits? BBR sell a Cosworth kit at £4k ish which boosts from the standard 160bhp to 240bhp which is the sort
of level I'm looking for - anyone owned or driven one?
Does anyone do a turbo kit which will fit under the MX5 bonnet?
Alternatively would conventional tuning give the same performance gain and who would I get to install same.
Cheers!
Lots of projects/comments over on MX5Nutz.
Turbo is probably the easiest/cheapest route but I'd not swap my s/c one for a turbo as it gives instant, bike like response.
S/c is however quite juicy, mine gives 22mpg no matter how it's driven - not an issue for Sunday blats or track-days but try driving down to
Italy and it's a tad expensive.
Even DIY s/c is likely to cost c£1500+ and that's using a second-hand Mini charger which are now becoming harder to find.
TBH if you want a boosted 5 (and I'd thoroughly recommend one, they can frighten Porkers and Ferraris ) buy one already done as some one-else
will have taken the hit.
However be aware that with all that extra power you'll convince yourself you need Meisters, frame rails, larger brakes and all manner of money
pit extras!
HTH.

Thanks Pewe, Mpg is not an issue she has only done 45k in 7 years
How did you install yours and how did you get the ignition and fueling setup?
The present car is in excellent condition and £1500 seems great value where did you get the manifold, injectors, sump etc?
Cheers!

My next engine project will be a Duratec once I have rebuilt and sold my 2.1 Pinto collection ( I have 2 x2.1 & 1x2.0)
So I am interested
It seems to be mostly about bellhousing, flywheel, sump and ECU
I may use this as an excuse to learn more about Megasquirt

Simples - bought the car already converted.
Having said that it was imported by Moss Europe who used it as a development car for their s/c kit.
The guy I bought it from then spent a shed-load on it incl. a Link ECU, individual coil packs and rolling road set-up etc. etc.
As I said above - let someone-else take the hit....
However if you want to DIY Emerald or Megasquirt seem to be the ECUs of current choice and Jackson Racing bits for manifolds etc.
There's a guy on Nutz called Barry Spiers who did most of the fabrication himself but it was a long drawn out exercise.
Alternatively Clairetoo on here offers a very nice front sub-frame for bargain money which IIRC can take a V6 - now there's a proper project.

I think your all missing the point that he has a mk3 mx5, whcih is a completely different kettle of badgers than a mk1/2 and you wont be doing it for 1.5k........
