a mid-newbie....where to start?

hi all! i'm an auto and electronics teacher in BC (Canada) and i've been building a BOOK locost with my senior kids. I'd like to start a new car and a MIDIE sure makes sense. All sorts of FWD engines around. Anyone out there have a practical spot to start at? Plans? Problems? thanks for any help!
