curiosity sake

Hey guys. Ive been gone for awhile, but my project is well alive. Ill be posting pics soon.

Just out of curiosity, my friend has a porsche 928 engine which is in good running condition when it was pulled out of the car. What would be needed to use that in a mid configuration? I understand that the the 928 was a front engine rear transaxle vehicle. Is there a transaxle that will bolt to this engine which will allow me mount in a mid engine configuration? Kind of like the "Andygtt" build with the bmw 750 engine, or the lambolounge guy with the audi gearbox. Any ideas?

Well we have an adapter plate made up so I guess you could do the same....

You may find it's cheaper to use a chevy V8, lots of adaptor plates already available and cheap parts.

The Porsche V8 is a bit specialised and getting parts made for it has to be issue, no one wil have what you want and the word Porsche will drive the price up.

I once heard that the transaxle of the 928, that is sitting in the back, between the rear wheels is bought from Mercedes, by Porsche. The gearbox was developed as a transaxle that was connected to the engine directly with a bell housing.

If this information is true, all you would need is to find a bellhousing of a certain Mercedes (I don't know which...) and you could use both the engine and gearbox of the 928 for your mid engine setup...

I know the 944 uses an audi box that has the complete bellhousing still in place, in the back.
But from the gut awat drawings I have of the 928 it looks as though it has no bellhousing and no provision for one.

tecnically you could shorten the torque tube between the engine and tranny as much as it will go but it won't make be very compact as one would want from a mid engined transaxle.

Check this sight out, not exactly a how to goide, but the pictures do contain a lot of info how to, but this guy used a 914 transaxle bolted to a 928 engine in his 914 (tight squeeze)

the transaxle from an audi 5000 and 5000t is used quite often by the lambo replica croud mated to a BMW V12 with quite a bit of success.
