Field antics

Ive heard it said that car builders are a stange bunch. Tell me tho- what is odd about spending the weekend in a field under a wobbly Audi in the pouring rain. I ask you!!

Anyway, having gone to haul a gearbox out, I got a bit carried away and came home with all sorts wierd and wonderful objects! Chief amongst these is some new fangled thing called a steering rack!

As I gazed at it in wonder (having spent about 2 bl**dy hours removing it ) it dawned on me that the fluids dripping out of it probably have something to do with power steering. Should I bother with this rack or try and get a non-assisted one. I not sure power steering is necessary for a mid-engined car- any thoughts...?

It depends on whether you're building a light-weight sports car or a tank! I would say you don't need assisted steering in a sub 800kg car.
I've been looking into one of the after-market electric steering kits though, for a car I'm designing. It's purpose is high-speed, straight-line off-road desert-racing, and with large-ish amounts of castor and scrub.

there is an electric ps kit for the mgb, based on a " britsh car "( prob rover ) pump. But there must be a Jap car maker that did the same.
Maybe in some frontcuts comming into the country.....?
