Calling all 4A-GE whizz kids!
Afternoon All.
I'm about start building my first kit car, its not really a locost, but i thought you guys might be able to help.
I'm building a sylva mojo2, based around a toyota 4A-ge engine. I have been told the engine and gearbox is sourced from the mk1 Mr2 which is
fair enough. However, i have been told that the same engine was fitted to several other cars in the uk, and I was wondering if there are any
differences between them?
Specifically I want to know if the engine and gearbox out of the mk1 mr2 is the same model number(s) as used in the toyota corolla gti as sold in the
uk.
Any help would be appreciated!

I'm sure it is all pretty similar, although I'm sure there are some differences....

Hi Andy,
I'm assuming you're the same Andy who posted a similar question on the Locost_Theory list a few days back.
There are quite a few variants of the 4A-GE motor, usually distinguished by the colour of the lettering on the cam covers (red or blue) and a few
other things, like TVIS inlet manifolds and so forth. See Club4AG for lots of reference material.
With respect to gearboxes: the Mk1 MR2 used a C52 gearbox as did the contemporay Corolla's. The box in the MR2 is different though!
The normal Corolla box has the selector linkages at the back of the box (firewall side in a FWD installation) - the MR2 version has the linkages at
the front (firewall side in mid-engine). I'm not aware of any difference in part/model number for the two versions. It is theoretically
possible to convert a FWD box to the mid-mount format and there are web pages around that show how to do this for the later E-series boxes used in the
Mk2 MR2.
I'm currently in the early construction stages of a mid-engined clubman style car using a Japanese import 20-valve Corolla motor and (FWD) box.
I'm not going to modify the box - I'll just have longer shift cables made to suit.

Thanks for the help guys,
I've had a mooch round the websites, got some quotes for imported engines and the like, and for the time being I have am picking up an early MR2
engine and box for a couple of hundred quid.
