Audi A4 based kit
Afternoon all,
I was pondering different kit designs and thinking about the mid engine and transaxle layout.
Most of the transaxle options seem to be very pricey, either a specialised racing transaxle for $$$ or from a 'fancy' road car (Porsche
etc).
Then I wondered about front engined, front wheel drive cars with fore-aft engines. And I came up with a few Audis, like the A4.
Which all leads to the question...
Are there any kits based around the A4.
Or is anyone building anything like that?

I've been wondering that myself, I think an Audi V8 and trans axle would be a mint way to go for a mid engine aka F1 type car...

There was the exoskeleton car, forget the name but that used Audi turbo/transaxle.

Wasn't there a Ford RS200 replica that used the Audi 1.8T and Transaxle.

New tiger era30 design. Uses Audi 80 or 90 transaxle setup. Not sure on the model.

Funnily enough I seriously thought about the Audi setup when I was designing the Furore, at the time (circa 8 years ago) the Audi transaxles were a
bit like hen's teeth & very expensive, would imagine they could be picked up cheap enough nowadays tho'. I would imagine the engine
electronics could be a bit of a game, but presumably you could use something like Omex to dispose of most of it?
I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator
headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names

Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours.

The Edge used the old Audi 100 5 pot lump & associated transaxle, old fashioned heavy & (compared to modern engines) underpowered must have
weighed more than the rest of the vehicle! However it was a least simple (bit like a Pinto in that respect)

Subaru's are ofter rear mounted in VW's
I like the idea of a H6 Subaru boxer engine rear mounted.
Wife's got one in an outback. 245bhp as standard.

My Spire GTR has a 1.8T and transaxle out of a B5 Passat (same platform as A4). I paid to have the immobiliser removed from the stock ECU and a remap
to allegedly 190bhp. I got the engine running last weekend  It only needs half a dozen wires spliced into the OEM loom to get it running, the trick
was working out which ones!
I'm a bilingual illiterate. I can't read in two languages.

I doubt that the engine weighed more than the chassis Russ. I remember seeing "The Edge" at a show a few years ago. The chassis was HUGE
and looked like a box girder bridge.

An idea close to my heart.
We've mid mounted Audi v8s in Mr2s already and proved the later ob1 gearboxes with the diff at the very front mate up too.
I'd love a mid engine space frame to fit it to. I did think of using a vx220 as a base but they're going up in price.
I basically want a v8 powered Porsche 904/8 on the cheap

Isn't the big issue with using the audi transaxle and engine in a front wheel drive car that the engine hangs out in front of the front axle, ok
is a rear wheel drive mid engine like the spire gt or a big heavy saloon. I guess you could turn it round, turn the transaxle upside down and use it
mid engine front wheel drive (similar to ultima or gt40s do with the 911 transaxle).

Chassis was light enough, but looked heavy. There was a picture of the company owner lifting it into the air and he wasn't a big guy.
2"x2" 16swg weighs double 1"x1" 16 swg but is 8x stiffer (roughly). Looks chunky, but you need less for the same overall
chassis stiffness. It was also a single seater, so rather narrower than a 7.

I'm in the middle of making a one off around the Audi alloy v8 (abz) and an 01E transaxle. Total engine and box cost me 450quid so far including
manifolds, halfshafts, ignition and fuel hardware. Quite long but not very porky, but certainly not light.
