Blacktop Zetec camblet change
I have to do a cambelt change on my tintop soon, It has a 2.0 16v Blacktop Zetec engine. Do I have to take the rocker cover off to time it up or
will I get away with just marking the cam pullies and changing the belt.
Many thanks
Mark.

on the silver top you need to take the cover of to line the cams up with a 5mm plate.
Not doing this will give you a good chance of being a tooth out.
I think the Blacktop is the same for this.

Have you had a look at the haynes manual for the zetec? Reason I ask, is I wouldn't fancy doing the job without one

I don't have a manual for the Zetec, no. I don't really intend on buying one either. I'm a techie by trade but I've never
really had any involvement with fords before.
I did a head gasket on my old silvertop and lined that up with the cover off as it was no extra work. I was hoping I could do this one without having
to take the top off. But I'm just being lazy.
Reason I ask is because I'd like to know if I'll need to order a new seal for the rocker cover. Think I'll just get one to be on
the safe side.

ideally you should use the 5mm plate to lock the cams and the "spike" to lock the crank into position. (there's a hole on the front
of the block where you screw the spike into).
No idea where it was used, but the garage which did mine also had a weird L shaped spanner with the equivalent of a castellated nut (without the
threads) on the end which they left under the bonnet.
For £10 of tools and whatever the camcover gasket costs, I wouldn't risk the job not being done right.

Having done my silvertop a while back, when you take the belt off if the engine is at tdc the cams will move as some of the valves are begining to
open and will snap closed as soon as the tension in the belt has gone. I would take the top off and do it with the correct tools.

You will need the correct tool to undo and tighten the cam pulley bolts or need to make one. DO NOT use the cam timing bar to lock the cams while
undoing the pulley bolts .

I do hope thats not from 1st hand knowledge of what happens.
You will need the correct tools for doing the job my mate found out the hard way tried to do it by marking the pullys and saving on a rocker gasket
ended up costing him 16 valves and guides!!
And he only had to ask to borrow the tools!!!
