axle ratio
hi
I have what I am reasonably sure is a English axle, how can I confirm this and how can I check the diff ratio
I dont know the origin of the axle

Take the dif out. The ratio was painted on mine. Don't know if this had been done by Ford or someone after though. So at worse you'll
just have to count the teeth and consult the manual.

They can be 3.5, 3,7, 3.9, 4.1, 4.4, 5.3 plus a few others, as already said count the crown wheel and pinion unless you are luck and it says what it
is.

count how many turns of input it takes to make 1 full turn of the output, bingo
i think the english diff will come out from the front of the axle, have a look on burtons web site, i'm sure they have a picture.

No need to strip it.
This procedure will give you the exact axle ratio.
(1) Lock one shaft so it dosen't move.
(2) Mark the position of the brake drum which is free to rotated against the brake backplate with Typex
(3) With the above 2 marks lined similarly mark the input shaft.
(4) Turn the input shaft counting the turns of both the input and output shafts until both sets of marks exactly line up.
Ratio = (number of turns of input shaft x 2)/ number of turns of output shaft
