2t folding crane and a hydraulic arm which could bolt to a trailer / truck

Davie, sorry no crane, but if it is just to lift engine into wifes car, muscle & scaffold poll & rope should do the trick. What kind of engine? I have a block & tackle hoist which u can borrow if its for in garage install & you have summat to hook onto.
give me a shout. cheers D.
Could poss help you out with a trailer if stuck.

its a zetec, i was thinking of taking out the passenger seat and getting the engine onto a board and jacking it up and sliding it into the car that way. thanks for the offer of the block and tackle but its a intergral garage and i wouldnt trust the strength of the joists

cheers Davie

Davie, not a great deal of weight in the Zetec engine. moved one in the back of the co estate not so long ago. Depends what you are collecting i.e. totally complete or minus alternator & pumps etc. Not a good idea if its manky & full of oil . where it coming from /to?

In pre crane days we used to make a staircase of spare wheels with a board on each platform to hump them up and down (but with my aching back Ishouldn't be recommending the technique!)

What about some scaffold poles? 2 tripods one at each end and a bar across the middle (or even two bars bound together with clamps.
Or a good beam or an "I" beam in the roof of the garage.

The a simple 1 ton Chain Pully block?
Cheap, Cheerful, and a LOT cheaper than a hydraulic crane. Something like this:

Linky

I have one, and its brill. Very controllable, and the only height limit is your supporting beam.

Have a good search on Ebay, cos they are not expensive. and very simple.
Just spray them with WD40 after use and store in a sack! (dont let them get moist or they rust and get stiff etc)
