tootall - 28/6/09 at 09:12 AM

been to the nurburgring last week and on my last and final lap i could hear a wining noise like a belt been too tight but obviously there are know belts then the noise stoped and so did the car as it put 4 litres of oil onthe track i got out and lifted bonnet and can see a pice of castng cracked to right of oil filter think it is were the oil pump lives not got engine out yet but the oil caused 4 motorbikes to crash and it cost mea fortune to get my car back 1468 euro to clean track etc and recover my car go some pics ill post them latter

richardh - 28/6/09 at 09:14 AM

yikes, that's really bad news.
hope the bikers are ok though.

prawnabie - 28/6/09 at 10:03 AM

The first time i went, one of the guys in my group left a trail of gearbox oil about 4km long. The had marshalls on the track that day - that cost 2500 euros to clean up!

JoelP - 28/6/09 at 10:08 AM

damn! can you get insurance for this sort of thing?

big_wasa - 28/6/09 at 11:15 AM

Thats put me of

prawnabie - 28/6/09 at 11:41 AM

Check this link out....

Damn! Bad luck OP!!!

That porsche was so pissing coolant everywhere..... Oh well, hope the porkers repair bill was suitably large for being antisocial.... I suppose the moral of the story is- if you develop a fault on the ring, pull over and get recovered!!

jeffw - 28/6/09 at 02:13 PM

Lucky you didn't kill anyone....you would have been paying for the rest of your life.

As your insurance will, almost certainly, not cover Ring use you could have faced unlimited 3rd party liability as well as the cost to clean the track and paying for the closure.

Sorry to hear of the demise of your motor (the Ring has a history of killing BEC cars) but you got off light compared with what could have happened.

Kriss - 28/6/09 at 06:21 PM

thats really bad news, but happy knowone is badly injured.

i also hope the car gets back and up and running too.

why is the ring such a bEC killer then? Say anymore than a normal track day doing 10-15 laps?

jeffw - 28/6/09 at 08:55 PM

Not entirely sure but there are sections which are flat-out for a very long time ( one section springs to mind where you are flat to the floor for 30 secs up a relatively steep hill) as well as some very high g corners (Carousel as a for instance). There have been a number of BECs die on the Ring.

wow sorry to hear the bad news, i was going to take mine this weekend but i think i will play safe and take the Seat Ibiza

tootall - 29/6/09 at 10:18 PM

the ring is alot hillyer than u would imagine and once your tyres are warmed up the cornering force is mad will go again but in a (ring dog) some old rear wheel drive pice of crap worth nothing then if it does brake ill just leave it at side of track and run into the trees lol

disco_biscuit - 30/6/09 at 05:41 AM

Was it a standard engine or did you have a sump baffle fitted?

iscmatt - 30/6/09 at 10:34 AM

did you get those pics yet? be interesting to see what happened - i hope to go to the ring at some point too!

tootall - 30/6/09 at 11:54 PM

that r1 and fire blade would make some nice doner bike for a bec kit lol
the r1 only had 2000km on clock

disco_biscuit - 1/7/09 at 05:47 AM

So what happens about the damage to the bikes? do you have to pay for that aswell?

tootall - 3/7/09 at 07:40 PM

there trying to claim off my insurance but its all complicated even i dont have a clue

fesycresy - 3/7/09 at 07:53 PM

So you could be liable

I know a guy who hit the armco in his CSL, they billed him £2500 for the recovery and repair of the armco.

If you had a policy with track day cover, would you be OK then ?

tootall - 4/7/09 at 01:32 PM

well my insurers say they insure me for a acident but i have not had a acident ?
so thats a dodgy area realy good job our lasses dad is a barister ?????

jeffw - 4/7/09 at 07:52 PM

Be very interested to see how you get on with this. Does your policy exclude the Nordschlief by name or refer to one way toll roads ?

Track day cover doesn't apply as it is considered to be a public toll road under German law...hence why there is 3rd party liability and why you will get pursed for the cost of the bike repairs.

Ninehigh - 4/7/09 at 10:48 PM

If it's a public road why do you need trackday insurance?

Because It is classed as a derestricted toll road and most insurers will not insure you on them.

I have a german 3rd party insurance policy on my car and ADAC cover, means im covererd on the ring if i take anyone off and I can get my car home, the rest (car repairs and track damage) is down to me.

would you even be counted as liable in this instance where it was an unforseeable incident? Fair enough if your cargo falls off its your fault, or if you forget your fuel cap and put diesel everywhere, but an engine failure is unavoidable?

prawnabie - 6/7/09 at 12:14 PM

Nothing to stop them taking you to court personally, I've heard of a few people being striped off there belongings this way for the same reasons.
