03 R1 Clutch destroyed
JoaoCaldeira - 29/9/09 at 11:46 PM

Hi all.

Just destroyed my clutch this weekend.
I was invited to do some drifting (actually, bad drifting, as it was my first time) plus some drag racing (did just 2 runs to feel the thing).
Water temp hitted 104º C, oil did 98º C (yes... I believe it's a bit extreme...)

Actually I was expecting a clutch failure, but I had to experience that for myself.

One of the friction plates is broken (I can move it with a finger with the clutch assembled)

I was using 2 diaphragm plates.

I'd like to know what is the strongest setup for this engine (could be almost ON-OFF setup).

Debris inside clutch cover (now I was starting to get worried)

A bit discolored?

The plated not aligned moves a few mils jut by finger

You can see it happening here

Thanks for all your opinions,
Joao

PS: Actually, I already have a turbo lying around, so a strong clutch is essential...

Hi
we use a billet coil spring conversion in all our race cars, the uprated coil springs get rid of the stupid diaphragm plate and stiffen the clutch without losing too much feel
So far it has proved to be pretty much spot on
give me a bell on 01449 736633 if you want more details
regards
Andy

Hi.

Thanks for all your replies.

Are you using the Barnett spring conversion along with OEM friction / steel plates or Barnett ones?

Andy:
I live in Portugal, and my spoken English is not that good.
Can you please email me?

Thanks,
Joao

Barnett billet plate conversion + black springs + OEM friction and clutch plates.

Barnett conversion pic in my avatar with OEM plates. Haven't driven it in anger yet though, only round the SVA centre.
