B*st*rds..Just been Robbed

Went on a training day from work today to a local hotel.

Left wallet in jacket pocket in a supposedly locked room ( stupid) to go for dinner.

30 mins after dinner get a called to reception for an urgent phone call.

Nice well spoken chap explains he is from Barclay card security division and wants to know If I have just made a large cash withdrawal. Then explains that My cards being used so asks me to check if I still have my wallet. So goes on to ask for the security details…as always confirm this and that…Then says he will cancel my Barclay card ..no probles.

Then says the computer show these other accounts at my address and do I want him to cancel them…

Gets normal security info But also My PIN for two accounts…

Now I am down over £3000 and according to the banks its my hard luck….

Bloody convincing Con

BenB - 21/1/10 at 04:54 PM

Eh? Are you saying he rang you up after getting your card and you gave over your PIN number as proof of ID?

andyharding - 21/1/10 at 04:54 PM

Didn't you wonder at any time how the bank knew you were at the hotel and to ring there to speak to you?

Got to be someone on the hotel staff.

If it's on credit and not debit card you can get it back via Consumer Credit Act.

Silly you for giving your pin out everyone knows they never ask for that!

andyharding - 21/1/10 at 04:55 PM

P.S. now you gave him all your security info too expect to have some personal loans taken out in your name

mad4x4 - 21/1/10 at 04:57 PM

Contact your bank and the POLICE as this is fraud...... assume the Barclay's rep that phoned you was not a barclays's rep

Do you have SENTINAL protection etc.... what is "barclays" fraud policy...

As said above has to be a HOTEL employee or someone in the room

Paul (Notts) - 21/1/10 at 05:00 PM

Barclays have my work number..The block on the phone said they had passed on the hotel number

did not ask for mt barclay card pin as he said he could just cancel that

Very convincing

No holiday for me this year

Police comming round soon as its fraud and not just a stolen wallet.

ashg - 21/1/10 at 05:00 PM

call the bank they should be able to tell you what machine it come out of. you then need to get the police to get the cctv tape from that machine and find them

sorry to say silly boy for giving out your pin, the bank will never ask you for it.

speedyxjs - 21/1/10 at 05:01 PM

Bastards!!!

mistergrumpy - 21/1/10 at 05:02 PM

And burglary. If someone enters your room in a hotel it is classed as your dwelling.

tul214 - 21/1/10 at 05:02 PM

BAD TIMES

Paul (Notts) - 21/1/10 at 05:12 PM

What makes it worst is that it was Pay day yesteday. So A whole months wages gone...

two days ago the account would have been empty

scootz - 21/1/10 at 05:28 PM

'kin 'ell

Gutted for you mate! It's easy to see the scam after the event, but not so obvious at the time!

Once it's been recorded by the Police get back in touch with the Fraud Dept at the bank... surely they won't abandon you!?

Agriv8 - 21/1/10 at 05:34 PM

Funkin el

Have you talked to the hotel CCTV tapes ?

fingers crossed for you.

inside job.....

SeaBass - 21/1/10 at 05:45 PM

Sorry to hear that. I wouldn't go near that hotel again...

mistergrumpy - 21/1/10 at 05:47 PM

The maids/cleaners at hotels have a tendency to prop the doors open as they clean them and so it is very easy for someone to quickly grab something from inside unfortunately. If there is no signs of force to the doors or windows then this could easily have been the case also.

My wallet was stolen from my jacket pocket whilst I was out of my office. I was warned by our receptionist but couldn't run fast enough to catch the bastard. I immediately reported it to police and barclaycard. Fortunately, the thief went into a shoe shop to buy some shoes with the card. The sales assistant wasn't happy and kept the thief waiting whilst she checked with Barclaycard. The idiot stood waiting long enough for the police to arrive and arrest him. I then later had to complete a statement saying that I had neither given or lent the thief my card. I hope your thief is as daft as mine was!

MikeFellows - 21/1/10 at 06:13 PM

I cant believe that happened to you 4 times

r1_pete - 21/1/10 at 06:13 PM

B@stards, must admit it sounds like an inside job, someone who could legitimately get in the room without rousing suspicion, and someone who knew your bank account was full!! hate to suggest - colleague??

Dangle_kt - 21/1/10 at 06:20 PM

dont the hotel have a duty of care if they said the room was locked?

What about the training company? Surely if they are providing the accomodation/training room and so can get pulled into it all.

I'd call citizens advice and see if there are any support you can claim - it wont help this month, but if you get hit by an uninsured driver you do get some compensation - I wonder if there is also something that covers this eventuallity?

Really sorry to hear your bad news, but good of you to be so honest on the forum and open yourself up to the "silly boy" comments. Its a lesson to us all, and wouldn;t be quite as effective without all the details you have given.

Roll on next payday!

Steve G - 21/1/10 at 06:47 PM

I'm confused as to whether you gave out your PIN or not to the supposed "Barclays staff"?? No member of staff ever get access to your PIN number so did they actually get access to your money from info gained from yourself??

Really hope you get sorted out anyway. Scumbags.

Isnt there a member on here who is a fraud investigator for a financial / insurance company of some sort??

name the hotel and shame

Andi - 21/1/10 at 07:13 PM

I got robbed while out of my hotel room in Inverness. On my honeymoon
Hotel states no liability unless you use the hotel safe.
Cards, cash and unopened wedding pressies.
Couldnt even pay the hotel until I had some dosh wired to me.
Should have known that marriage was doomed

ouch!!!

don't kick yourself too hard - let me do it

the thieves are well practised so it is easy to get fooled.

hope you get your cash back - that is a shed load

mistergrumpy - 21/1/10 at 07:32 PM

There's no point really. This isn't uncommon with hotels.

l0rd - 21/1/10 at 07:42 PM

I am really sorry to hear that.

When i go to hotels, i never leave anything lying around. Everything is locked inside my suitcases all the time.

I hope they find the Bas****rd and let you alone with him in a locked room where you would have all your tools.

Best of luck.

keith777 - 21/1/10 at 08:19 PM

Rotten luck, was the door accesible with a key or electronic card,if a card some of the latest ones can be read with a p.d.a which will tell you the times the door was opened, whose card-cleaner, maintenance, duty manager, guest etc good luck-Keith

NeilP - 21/1/10 at 08:24 PM

Really sorry to hear that Paul - In the heat of the moment as you're panicing because of the 'bad news' it's all to0 easy to do the wrong thing - hindsight, as ever, is about as useful as a bike engined kit car

MakeEverything - 21/1/10 at 08:41 PM

My wife got a Gucci bracelet and some cash nicked from a hotel guest room when away with work. She phoned the police, and eventually they caught the thieving shithead, and nicked her. The hotel also recompensed for the stolen stuff, and she got a replacement Tiffany bracelet for christmas that year. Needless to say, i didnt get anything for it.......

Paul (Notts) - 22/1/10 at 03:39 PM

Update..

Looks like I may be able to recover some of the money ( not what I was originally told by the chap in India on the phone.) One of the banks gave out £1200 over the counter accepting a photo driving licence as proof of id so having pointed out that they should have looked at the photo they are now reconsidering the case.

Banks fraud office ( in UK not at the end of a phone in India) have been very helpful

Turns out it’s a gang going round the country doing the same scam at hotels.

What they do is look for conferences then steal wallet and take note of what conference you’re at and what you do. They then wait around until you return from lunch. Phone up and ask for you by name. They the tell you they are from Barclaycard security division and that you employer ( they get this from the conference list that’s often posted.) gave them the hotel number.

They then go on to inform you that your cards must have been stolen but but the police have arrested one of the two people involved. No need to panic they have stopped my Barclay card …But they then say that they can see on screen that I have accounts with…and end up conning you into giving your pin number. Along the way asking you to confirm info and telling you info ( they get from your wallet. EG they tell you your address but ask you to confirm your house number, They tell you the first 3 digits of your phone number and ask for the last 3.

They also gain time by telling you the police are going to get in touch but it may take ½ hr before they call and give a crime number for you.

Paul

smart51 - 22/1/10 at 05:16 PM

Could you have a claim against the hotel for the un-reimbursed losses? They said the room would be locked.

wilkingj - 23/1/10 at 11:53 AM

When I bought my Chassis at Luego, I paid by Credit Card.
Within 5 minutes the card co was ringing me on my mobile.

I NEVER EVER tell them Anything at all, I wont discuss any banking or card stuff on an INCOMING call to me
I ALWAYS then close the call and Phone THEM, on a number I know is their number.

They put me thru to the right dept, and all was explained. £2k on a card that rarely sees more than £100 spent, raised the flag!.

Simple Rule is NEVER believe ANYONE who rings you, saying they are from the bank car co or whatever.

ALWAYS RING THEM, on a number you know.
Ring Directory enquiries if in doubt, ie dont trust callers to be genuine. A 60p DQ call is cheap in comparison to the potential loss and grief.

I have had this happen several times. £500 of cigars bought in Los Angeles, when I was in the office at work!

These B'Stards are really cheeky, and they often get away with it.

Also NEVER tell them your PIN, Banks etc will NEVER ask for it. Thats why they have your date of birth, postcode, and inside leg measurement.

Bad luck mate, hope it gets sorted and not costs you too much.

rusty nuts - 23/1/10 at 06:10 PM

Hope it all gets sorted out OK Paul. About time the government started dishing out harder sentences for any thieving scum that's caught! Like cutting off hands

Paul (Notts) - 29/1/10 at 05:55 PM

Halifax bank have been fantastic in dealing with this...

Paul

Irony - 30/1/10 at 12:10 AM

Hope you get this sorted. Seems to me there are some right B£@$ards about that need punishing properly and not given community service.

Funny how I here only bad things about Barclay's customer service.
