Rear uprights bent???
rusty nuts - 24/1/10 at 06:27 PM

Stripping the powder coating from my IRS rear uprights today I found that the main upright plate to be bent at the top, both sides appear to have a different bend. Suspect the problem may have been caused by the crush tube issues common to Luego's?Can anyone confirm that the plates should be straight? . Thanks in advance for any help with this . Mel

PS it may be worth checking yours if your car has IRS?

I think the Velocity and Locost rear upritghts were a flat plate. The Viento ones are unlikly to bend due to the different design.

Have you got any pictures? I have a velocity that is not yet on the road so would like to see what has happened?

thanks

Thanks for the link Paul, would have been handy when I was building the car in the first place seems like all those years ago . Looking at the photo of the rear upright it looks like the main "plate "is straight .Andybarbet is going to double check for me . May have to straighten and reinforce mine . As I said in my original post I suspect it may have been caused by the crush tubes being too short. Yet another thing to check guy's!!

Hopefully this will work. Have placed both rear uprights back to back which shows just how much they appear to be bent . I'm sure that I have never hit a kerb etc but there are a few potholes in the area. As said the only thing I can think of that would cause this is the crush tube problem I had a couple of years ago . I'm thinking of placing each upright in a press to straighten and then reinforce maybe by welding/bolting a 10mm plate onto the outside . May be worth checking yours guys as I'm sure I can't be the only one with this problem, I may get some extra plates cut if there is enough demand.

Hi Mel,
Mine are dead flat but a different design to yours, mine are much beefier, hopefully i have attached a picture to make it clearer, i reckon you need to modify to match - mine must be a newer design ??
Hope this helps mate,

I have the same as Andy's which is why I was surprised about them bending....

I would keep an eye on ebay for some second hand replacements

Can't see any reason why I can't straighten mine out and weld on the reinforcing piece . Obviosly old Luego must have changed the design for the Velocity, wonder if they knew there was a problem ? If I can't repair them I will get in touch with Matt at Casarva , he was doing rear uprights on ebay at one time . Thanks for all your help. Mel

I have the sme as Andys on my Viento and after nearly 30,000 miles of hard driving there still straight. If they can put up with 300lb of torque there cant be too much wrong with the later/modified design.

I straightened mine out in a press then bent and welded on some 8mm steel strip to the outer edge . Did them getting on for 4 years ago with no problems since. I'm sure that I had never hit a kerb or anything else to bend them , just think the design could perhaps nhave been better

My Viento ones were like Andys. I am fairly sure that Luego changed the design.

Happy Xmas to you all..
